In the opening section, I've suppressed the part that says Bartok was influenced by gamelan, Chinese, and Japanese music in his own compositions. While both may contain similar scale usage (such as whole tone, which is somewhat like Indonesian slendro), it's not at all clear to me that this came about because of his exposure to music from these cultures. I welcome good documentation that this is the case if it exists.
