Since page is locked, I figured I'd mention an example of this trope here for when it gets unlocked. Roshar the planet in the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson has a lake called the purelake that is the size of an inland sea. It is however only about 6 feet deep at maximum with no waves and people live in the water. I figure this trope is a justified trope as it occurs on another planet with different biology.

The trope isn't for literal waist-deep oceans, though. It's for when characters are shown standing chest-to-ankle-deep in water that should be well over their heads.
