"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAbout half of the examples are about similar-but-not-equal sets of virtues. Some even have more or less than seven.
Edited by DonaldthePotholer Hide / Show RepliesThis in itself is a pretty clear indicator that the "seaven heavenly virtues" is not the trope in and of itself, but instead the pattern of a system of virtues is. There is a very clear trope pattern here, as can be attested by the multitude of examples that have already been found, and the trope article should be reoriented or rewritten with less focus on any particular system of virtues and more focus on the generics of the pattern. The numerological meaning of the number seven is hardly relevant to the trope of virtue ethics in general - some virtue-ethical systems are intentionally constituted by seven virtues, some coincidentally, but the majority are made up of a different number of virtues entirely. Numerology is one trope, virtue ethics is another. There is no reason to make a whole new trope out of the combination of the two, particulary when the site lacks an article for one of the constituent tropes (in this case "virtue ethics").
I have purged the irrelevant examples to the YKTTW linked to above.
"The Seven Heavenly Virtues are seven basic concepts that will lead your soul to honor. Repeated in various forms throughout the world (and beyond), the universally assorted ways to be virtuous have many combinations and permutations, as shown in the examples below. However, the general gist of them can be found in this list - seven essential personality traits which guide people in morality. Undeniably, these are the basic "rules of behavior" for any true hero, veiled or otherwise."
While this whole article ought to be reoriented to focus more on the trope pattern of virtue ethics in general as opposed to the particular incarnation of the "seven heavenly virtues", this paragraph in particular needs to be rephrased. The "seven heavenly virtues" is only one of a multitude of similar virtue-ethical systems that have been identified through the ages, as the multitude of examples will attest to. In particular the use of the word "undeniably" needs to be reconsidered; there is nothing undeniable about anything in this article, save for the examples themselves.
Hide / Show RepliesA potential supertrope of this one dealing with other virtue-ethical systems is currently being processed at https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=gzv23kmlyrr0bcjrnz9csg99
Someone has made a mistake with either the page name or the content, despite the name the page is about the seven capital virtues (the virtues that oppose the seven deadly sins;chastity-temperance-charity-diligence-patience-kindness-humility) and not the seven heavenly virtues(which are the three theological virtues plus the four cardinal virtues;faith-hope-charity-prudence-justice-temperance-fortitude)
Although they do share two virtues between them these are two different and distinct virtue systems with their own history, the page should be able to be fixed by just changing the title to 'Seven Capital Virtues' and modifying the first paragraph to mention that they're different from the heavenly virtues, but if this was originally meant to be about the actual seven heavenly virtues the entire page needs to be rewritten
I'm not sure what the goal for this page was though so I hope someone can help fix this or let me know how to fix it!
