I've seen the film. It's a case of both, but as described below he wants to avenge his son's death. His son was s horrible, horrible person that kidnapped and sold off girls as sex slaves and was killed by Brian, the father of one og the girls he kidnapped. Murad doesn't care that his son was evil and deserved his fate and it's implied that it was he his son learned his trade from.

The Taken 2 example seems not to fit. Which would be ironic, since it provides the page quote. I haven't seen it, but what's described here looks like a case of Avenging the Villain.
