I'm not sure I understand what the complaint is here (ignoring for the moment that a trope shouldn't primarily be about complaint — this one clearly is). Stories set in wars tend to be about characters tasked with strategic objectives — which are, by and large, what battles are actually for... at least, the ones worth writing stories about. All the take-and-hold is about getting people into a position where they can do whatever needs doing to stop the enemy/aid the allies, it's rarely about "if we can kill more of them than they kill of us, they'll get scared and go home".
