Is there any reason why it has to say "two male friends"? If there anything about having a female character in an example that would disqualify it from being this trope? (or both female - see Wicked). If not, maybe that should change.
I just changed the first line from "in anime" to "in fiction". It looked really awkward and didn't really explain why, and we're trying to cut down on that sort of provincialism. If there is a good reason why it had to say "in anime", by all means change it back.
