What would the trope be if the evidence was real, and the show is doing it for comedy to show how much of an incompetent the criminal is?
There was a Sherlock Holmes audio story I heard one time where Sherlock is asked to investigate some murdered cops who had been stripped naked after they were killed and during the investigation he finds several bizarre clues including a compass with Coptic symbols and a train ticket to a town hardly anyone ever goes to. Sherlock eventually realizes that the entire thing was distraction designed to make him think some kind of grand conspiracy was going on while the villain committed a far simpler theft of a Macguffin.
