I wouldn't know, I didn't play Populous. (Small Reference Pools strikes again, I guess.)
As far as the spelling issue, blame the spellchecker and British vs. American English. Me or someone else may have auto-"fixed" it without paying attention.
Okay, since I took it out and subsequently got reverted, I guess we're in discussion territory.
So, I'll say again: Sim City 2000 as the Trope Codifier? Seriously? This took eleven years to be codified? I know that most of the 80s ZX Spectrum Filmation games (and those that homage it, like Ritman's Batman and Head Over Heels) probably won't count, but... Populous certainly beat SC 2000 to the mark by four years and went global.
Also. Changing "recognised" to "recognized"? NOT COOL.
