Maybe. It's a similar concept but with a different mechanic. Though Fog of Doom has some "the mist bring the monsters with it" aspects that aren't present in Darkness Equals Death.
Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.

Possibly, but the alternative(/previous?) title for Darkness Equals death was Eaten by a Grue, and the page quote is from Zork and part of the danger of Darkness Equals Death is getting snatched in the dark.
Would it be accurate to compare Fog of Doom to Darkness Equals Death?
