I'm not sure where to put Neopets in here. It's a browser game, but it seems awkward to add a new tab. Technically it could be a MMO, since you do play a role, and there are supposedly millions of players.

But, anyway. You have to train levels and stats independently, so levels inherently do nothing (though you do need to have levels to train stats). Furthermore, stats don't do anything until they reach a certain point. For example, 55 strength will do the same damage as 56, 57, 58...all the way up to 79. There won't be a damage increase until 80 strength. Since training a single point in either level or a stat takes several hours, weeks or months can go by without gaining an actual boost. Empty, indeed.

I'll leave this here for Wiki Magic

There seems to be two different tropes sharing a name here: Levels that don't increase your power much, and levels that actually weaken you. I recommend we split the page into Empty Levels and Trap Levels, or at least type 1 and type 2.

Thoughts?

Mah, they're both the same concept really, as I see it. Any situation where gaining a level doesn't beenfit you would apply to both cases.

I removed the picture since it's blatantly false. It portrays leveling as automatic and forced when it isn't. As someone else stated before:

To be even more fair to Oblivion, the game never forced a level up. So you could take as long as you needed. In fact, it was very much discouraged to take your level as soon as possible, as the more of your skills you raised the better stats you'd get when you did decide to level.

I added that illustration - although I understand the objection, I think it is useful to have some kind of picture showing the concept. Would a different caption (e.g. "Well, if you didn't want to level up, why did you push the button?") help?

My two cents: I think the illustration is appropriate and should stay.

I'll put back with a new caption, then.

Thanks for fixing it then. I suppose I should ask before making such drastic edits in the future.

Don't sweat it — your point was entirely fair.

And now the caption is much more accurate.

Thanks, I love the people of this site.
