Old names that need to be cut are those that actively contribute to confusion about what the trope actually is or what people are referring to a la Rape The Dog or Incredibly Lazy Pun. Renamed tropes still have the possibility somebody is going to throw the old name up, it happens. As long as Redirects Are Free we are happy to keep old names on as redirects as potential safeguards and reminders as to what happened.

Not to mention that renames rarely please everybody and that having the old name as a redirect is a salving balm that helps those who were overruled.

OK, at this point, anyone coming through the cut list will see I'm just copy-pasting because it seems like Twentington just went idling through the renamed tropes list picking names he didn't like at random. Hypothetical guesses about what other people do is not a reason. Reasons why things were renamed are not automatic reasons for a cut. Why is this as a simple redirect so awful? Actual problems with current wicking practises required.

Yeah, this is going to be pasted too. Mwah ha ha ha!

Additionally, redirects are there for a reason, either to provide an easily searchable alternative name, or to keep from breaking wicks and inbound links. In this case, there are 88 internal wicks that would be redlinked by cutting this, and 216 external links (almost three times as many as What Were They Selling Again? (82) has.

OK, well, to be fair, looking at some of those wicks I do see misuse and using it in place of Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!. This also makes me concerned about those external links. We'll need to check to see if these are new or old wicks and check if the external links are faithful (they do tend to be better than internal wicks for this sort of thing).

How do we check the external links? They aren't listed anywhere except on the Inbound Links of the Day page, as far as I know. We simply have to decide whether we're going to assume they're right or assume they're wrong. In the interest of not giving the site a reputation for breaking inbound links, I'm inclined to go with "assume that they're mostly right".

A lot of wicks treat this as using things as blatant distractions. What if we rewrote this to be a trope about that?

One example would be from Atop The Fourth Wall. "And the answers to this are... look at the cute little bunny!"

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

We already have Go Look At The Distraction for deliberately calling someone's attention to something as a distraction from something else, and Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! for doing it unprompted.

And in general, chasing the examples with the definition just to preserve a name is a really bad idea...

Some Sort Of Troper, that's my point. The old name of this trope seems to be misused for Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! and/or Go Look At The Distraction almost all the time.
