Back in October 2019, Tropers.Fuzzy Barbarian removed the following:

  • Batman: A positive version of the trope is present in the dynamic between Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) and his adopted son, Dick Grayson (aka Nightwing). Bruce and Dick have a strained relationship, often because of Bruce's cold and harsh treatment of Dick as he trained him as a Kid Sidekick. However, there's no denying that the two still love each other dearly. Dick has resolved that he will never become the type of person Bruce was, and at various times when he's had to become Batman in Bruce's place, he made sure to treat his own sidekicks with more compassion and respect. Bruce himself acknowledges and approves of this approach, and has stated that he is proud of his "son" for becoming a much better person than he could ever be.

For the edit reason: "Not an example, as Bruce's parents are EXTREMELY RARELY presented as abusive in any way, and Bruce never laments it."

The issue is that Bruce's parents are not what the example's about: Bruce himself is. The point is that Bruce often mistreats his sidekicks and adopted sons, and Nightwing has said he will never be that sort of person. So when Nightwing has sidekicks of his own (especially during his tenures as Batman), he treats his sidekicks with more respect.

Thanks for the message.

I misread the example really badly it seems.

However, I can't think of an instance when Dick specifically brings up Bruce's parenting as his reasons for how he treats sidekicks who he has a fatherly relationship with (the only instance of even that would probably be Damian in my mind, and that's more of a brotherly thing). It seems more like an extension of him just being a Nice Guy in general.

Good point. And now that you mention it, I can't specifically think of an occasion, either.
