I have no evidence to support this theory, and don't know if anyone else has ever suggested it, but it's always seemed to me that indigestion doesn't cause bad dreams; it wakes you up abruptly, and means you're more likely to remember them.

This trope reminded me of my Dad. When he ate Pizza Hut Super Supreme pizza he would wake my mom up throughout the night. He was still asleep but he had his arms held up and asked her to help hold up the ceiling because it was falling. He also woke her up and said "Deb what color was that fish? Was that peuce?" So I believe this trope is based on real life.

I seem to remember on Highway To Heaven that at least once, Jonathan the angel would get Mark to eat a sub sandwich right before bedtime, so that Mark's dream would combine with 'the stuff' and good things would happen. The plot synopses I've read don't mention this though.
