I put it in because it is heartwarming to young Harry—and while it might be a Call-Forward to the shield training, he probably didn't go right out then and there and start winging fastballs at the kid's face. If nothing else, he probably wouldn't have had Harry keep the glove on him when he does do the training, which points to that point, at least, being genuinely just a game of catch.
About the entry regarding Du Morne giving Harry a baseball and glove... I never found that particularly heartwarming, given how Harry was trained to make shields...
