Not an Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer! Alex can't go away to college because he can't get a loan to pay tuition — his grades never come up. For that matter, going to the local school ("city college") seems to be a fait accompli — there's no question about being able to go, he just doesn't want to go to a community college (the elitist).

He fits most of the criteria for the trope. The example could stand to be trimmed, though, to correct the error about his qualifications. Still, it's fairly clear that he had a humdrum, go-nowhere life to look forward to on Earth.
