I found this interview with the director of the movie, that seems to suggest the ending to be much less apocalyptic than what everyone thought. In his interpretation, all that time Calvin just wanted to communicate, and now he finally could, having somehow "evolved" in the pod, and this would be why he hasn't killed the last astronaut by the end. Not sure which tropes this could cover, so I 'll just put it here. https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/about-the-end-of-life-director-daniel-espinosa-explains-what-happens-next
"If Calvin is able to assimilate, digest, and metabolize as quickly as shown on-camera, it's very likely to die due to Earth-bound microbes it had no defense against, War of the Worlds-style."
Doesn't make sense to me. As best I'm aware, a high metabolism doesn't imply that something's prone to disease.
Kick the world, break your foot.
