It's a MacGuffin for most of the movie until Tikka uses it to save Jakoby. Even then it is used only twice in the movie proper and we never find out much about it's nature. I would classify it as played straight with a subversion at the end.
MacGuffin - is something a MacGuffin if it has intrinsic value? I get everyone is pursuing it, which drives the plot, but its also a weapon.
