As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site. Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it. Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.

Important things to know:

  • We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
  • Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
  • Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.

Those are called Herald PMs and they're sent to give the rules so new posters to a specific forum either understand the etiquette or can't claim they were never told about the etiquette.

Not every forum has a Herald, but for the ones that do, the PMs can't be turned off.

And if you find them annoying, try being a Herald. It's a pretty easy job in and of itself, but the amount of automatic PMs you're always sending is insane and take up a lot of inbox space. And if they could just be turned off by other posters, I've no idea how it would even affect my own inbox.

Can't they just post the rules in some locked thread or just follow the normal TV Tropes rules?

It's more complicated than that. People don't read rules threads- so we need to get to them directly.

In either case, this is a discussion better suited for ATT or Wiki Talk.

Well, how do you know people read this shit? A lot of people might just say "ugh another one of these" or maybe even completely ignore it.

Sure, but they can't claim afterward they weren't informed of the rules and etiquette. Also as a herald myself, numerous people have responded to the PM I sent.

And again, not the place for this.

The point of the herald is to proactively engage tropers of a subforum's atmosphere and expectations - turning it off would rather contradict the whole point. Besides, even if you find it annoying, there is a hard cap on it. We don't have infinite subforums.
