I'm almost sure that skills that cost MP are not intended to be seen as limit breaks, even if they fit a strict reading of the trope's definition.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.What I would like to know is, what is the aim of Limit Break? Is it exclusive to ultimate attacks? Or is it broad enough to cover any move that has a condition to meet in order to use? Because most people seem to think it's the former, myself included a while back.
Going off of the tales series, would things like Lloyd's secret Mystic Arte (the one that required a specific weapon and HP condition) count as a Limit Break, or is that just a more specific Finishing Move?
Looking over the page, I think that it might need a little reworking, or at least a little clarification as to what the examples should be.
^ Yeah, I agree with a little rework. The trope is a little ambiguous over what it's getting at, and it seems to generate the perception that it's about character ultimate attacks in general, not moves that require a limit to be broken.
Lloyd's secret Mystic Arte would count since he's meeting those requirements to pull it off.
Actually limit breaks can overlap with finishing moves (because in one of the Tales games, a character uses a Mystic Arte to finish off a final boss). Limit breaks can also overlap with super move portrait attacks as well (though both tropes are basically the same, one has a character portrait appear before the attack and the other doesn't).
What separates limit breaks from regular and special moves in general is that limit breaks cannot be used with impunity (ie spammable). A character has to meet the conditions for using the limit break first, but spending regular MP/whatever does not count. It has to be something extraordinary being spent to launch the limit break.
It could be something like the limit break being casted from hit points for example (meaning a user could jeopardize their life trying to limit break the enemy). The limit being broken in that case is trying to bypass the limits of mortality to get the power to strike down a foe, but also the extra power ends up being way too strong for the user to endure.

I noticed that Limit Break has been prone to misuse. If I'm reading the trope right, it says here that a Limit Break is a type of move that a character can perform when a certain condition is met. However, in many JRPG and anime pages, most people think that a Limit Break is a character's ultimate attack, regardless if it has a condition or not.
For example, in the Tales Series, by the trope's defination, all Artes qualify as a Limit Break because they consume an MP meter which can be refilled by attacking, defending, etc., not just Mystic Artes (which are ultimate attacks).
For actual ultimate attacks, I think they would either fall under Finishing Move or Super Move Portrait Attack.
