Probably too early to judge whether it's actually a Franchise Killer due to the Wii U sucking, but it's in a gray area.

If we follow the literal definition of Franchise Killer as detailed here, then the entry should remain deleted. Color Splash did not suffer from negative reception by critics nor fans (Metacritic scores are 76 and 72, respectively). It did sell poorly (at least when compared to other Mario games), but we have to take into consideration that the game was released at the end of the lifespan of an unpopular console. And as you've stated yourself, there's no official statement by Nintendo that the franchise has been put on hiatus.

Also Nintendo tends to not make as many games in some of their lesser franchises/spin-offs. Metroid had a long stretch without an entry back in the N64 era and that's because they couldn't figure out what to make with it.

Did that mean Super Metroid was a Franchise Killer? Nope. I think in a previous ATT query, I mentioned Franchise Killer probably needs a strict time limit of something like 10-15 years since a previous entry in a franchise or series before it could be considered killed.

There was a five-year gap between Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star, which is longer than it's been since Color Splash. It's not a Franchise Killer.

Franchise Killer esPlease now requires 5 years to prove it stayed dead long enough to count. Especially since games like this require 2-3 years to develop.

We also technically allow examples with Word of God confirmation. But that's been abused lately (they keep adding Terminator examples even though Genisys even though it was rebooted too quickly to count and Dark Fate despite said word only saying plans were effected but it's too soon to say how said word not following this wiki's new standard).
