One way is to say the reference which episode/issue the reference is to.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Spoilers Off on a work page does not always apply to external works, since the point is that the reader should be assuming the full spoiler risk for one specific work.

Like so many other things on this site, it's complicated.

Yeah, Spoilers Off only applies to the work in question and previously-released installments in the same continuity if the work assumes familiarity with them. Spoilers for unrelated works or later installments (such as for Hilarious in Hindsight) should be tagged.

I agree. Spoilers should, indeed, be tagged.
