In broad terms, Awesomeness by Analysis. And The Profiler is prone to notice this.

There's Connect the Deaths, but that isn't quite what I'm looking for.
I'm looking for something that would fit a moment in Touch Detective 3. The protagonist, Inspector Daria, and a random civilian are the only non-victims, and when trying to think about why it's just them, Daria realizes that the three of them either didn't bother to or had forgotten to write a tanzaku (prayer flag) for Tanabata (a Japanese festival), and therefore the culprit is somehow targeting people through their tanzaku.
Is there a trope for that kinda thing?
