Still looking. It seems to be a downplayed Hysterical Woman. I can't think of anything more accurate.
Played for Laughs. In old sitcoms, a homemaker or a (usually older) hired housekeeper is on the edge of her seat with suspense, Inelegant Blubbering as she watches a Soap Opera. Her husband, children, or employer enter the room and are concerned to find her crying. She's barely coherent as she summarizes the plot. They're sympathetic, but of course, isn't she a silly old bird to get so wrapped up in it?
What (probably) discredited or forgotten trope is this part of?
