Sounds like an adapation of The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde , prehaps the Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child version?
I think this was a movie but it was about a pidgeon in a city who didn't want to fly south for the winter, more or less. She was friends with a talking statue. She dies at the end and causes the statue's heart to rend in two. The end is like in a forge or something and the welder goes "I've put the heart through five times and it's still broken" and then they just throw it out with the now dead pigeon corpse. Then it's spirit and the spirit of the bird flying up into heaven together. I can't find it on google.
