I Googled "magical dodo bird" and got a Wikipedia result for something called "Do Do, The Kid from Outer Space." I don't know if that's what you're looking for. The show is actually from the 60's, and the theme song doesn't contain the line "magical dodo bird" but it was the best I could find. The cartoon DOES apparently feature an alien bird, though.
Just looked that up, that's the most 60s cartoon I've ever seen. It's not that though, but thanks for the suggestion. It was definitely 80s or 90s, and much more colourful.

! No wonder I couldn't find it, nothing about dodos, and he wasn't rainbow coloured but he did change colour. Given the character's full name was 'Fiddley Foodle Bim Bam Boodle Oo Diddley-Doodle Oodle Bird' and I was only 3 when it started, you can see how I'd get confused though.
Wow, voiced by Dennis Waterman, narrated by Bruce Forsyth, I'm not sure there's ever been a more British cartoon.
I'm trying to remember the name of a cartoon I watched in the mid-90s, although the cartoon itself may well have come from the late 80s I suppose. Essentially it was about some kids who (I think) read from a book and summon a magical bird - imagine Big Bird (bipedal, big body, long neck) only rainbow coloured and with a bill similar to that of a toucan. The bird could take the kids with him to different universes, or maybe different stories, I forget. The bird had a ridiculously long name but used a shorter version which I think was the name of the show.
Any thoughts? Probably a long shot, I've asked before in various places with no luck. The theme tune ended on "something something something something Magical Dodo Bird!" or something like that.
