As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site. Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it. Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.

Important things to know:

  • We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
  • Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
  • Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.

Oh, i thought that was how it already worked. Strange why it doesn't do that. Do many people launch pages and never add a laconic page for it?

Anymore ideas on how to automate the creation of different namespace pages?

All TLP Drafts have laconics, so when the page is launched, there shouldn't really be difficulties automatically making a corresponding Laconic/ page as well.

As for different namespaces, as mentioned, the TLP creation form has the Namespace and Page Type fields, but currently they support tropes only.

Do you think I should add more fields to the TLP creation and also automate the creation of said fields as new namespace pages?

Yeah definitely. I know the TLP is supposed to be used for launching tropes, but if it were expanded to also be usable to launch stuff like Just for Fun, work pages, etc. that'd be great because it's one of the best tools for learning TV Tropes Syntax and stuff. Also it's really wierd to me that there is a drop down menu for the namespace and page type, but they literally only have a single option each.

TLP in effect is the wiki's form for creating a new article, but other people can postpone or cancel the launch of a trope because of any issues. A work page (or useful notes or just for fun) doesn't require voting, but TLP can be used for proof-reading before publishing it. It's not really suitable for subpages, as just a single (not always) example is enough.

Laconics aren't technically mandatory, but they do provide a short summary of a page that can be used to find it in lists, so they are always nice to have. Currently, adding a Laconic subpage for new tropes means finding the draft again in TLP and pasting draft's laconic to a new page.

An article has a namespace, a title, a page type, and page content. TLP Creation has all these, but because on-paper it's limited to tropes, for work pages people have to cancel their draft once they have enough feedback and create the page manually.

It may make life easier for some if the "Namespace" field has Main and Media Namespaces (+ JustForFun/ and UsefulNotes/) (alternatively it can just be a text field, if a namespace isn't right someone in the draft comments can point it out). For the "Page Type" field see page types. Though all except Trope, Index, Disambig (which share Main/) are tied to the namespace, so if the namespace isn't Main selecting a pagetype is unnecessary.

I don't think any other fields for the "Launch a New Trope" menu (it's also an odd name because it creates a draft and doesn't launch a trope) are needed. The only other part of an article is the custom title, but when TLP draft is launched, the field asks to confirm the display name (According to TLP Guidelines, it sounds a bit incomplete and punctuation has to be applied post-launch, which is weird).

To fool-proof in case there's already another work with the same name, the user can be warned beforehand that disambiguation is recommended.

Sorry if that sounded repetitive or excessive. In short, I think we can allow tropers to create TLP drafts with Media Namespaces, and the launch button would create the page in the selected namespace along with the Laconic page with the same name.

Interesting, thanks Amonimus for the detailed breakdown. I need to fully understand the TLP if i'm going to be adding or altering the code in any way so i appreciate it.

  • Okay so i should change the launch button name to “Launch Trope Draft For Review” or something like that?

  • Since launching a trope page can take months, i was thinking of also offering the ability to add additional namespace page launches to the overall launch of a page. I could easily add a button to generate a similar list of input fields as the TLP under the main ones when you edit them. So if the author or anyone else thinks of a namespace idea and want to add it in before the page is even launched they can. Then when you click the launch button once finished, it launches the main page, the laconic and any namespace pages created attached.

  • I suggest "Create A New Draft".
  • If you mean like a sub-draft for Playing With/, Trivia/, YMMV/, etc. to launch them together with the main page, it's a bit difficult for me to imagine how it'd look like, but it does sound useful.
