Possibly, there is some overlap. I mean examples such as:

  • Fawlty Towers: Basil is terrified to find out that a guest is a psychiatrist, and is convinced that his every move is being analysed. This psychiatrist keeps appearing throughout the episode, every time Basil is in an awkward situation. (Not really a Drop-In Character here.)
  • Keeping Up Appearances: In many episodes, Hyacinth's poorer relatives Daisy and Onslow turn up unexpectedly, embarrassing her when she is trying to make a good impression. Also, the neighbour Emmet cannot stand Hyacinth; he'll go somewhere to get away from her, and there she is. (Played with as a Drop-In Character.)
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: The inept and fame-hungry Professor Lockhart keeps arriving at awkward moments for Harry, for example just as Malfoy sneers "Oh look, Potter's giving out signed photos!"
