It's merely an assumption I made because Sand Barioth hadn't appeared in Iceborne despite normal Barioth appearing. I know there's a similar precedent with Pink Rathian and Azure Rathalos not appearing in Tri or Portable 3rd despite those games having their nominate species, but then appearing in 3 Ultimate; so I hope Sandy can reappear one day as it was one of my favorite monsters in 3U. Also, I wasn't aware of the MHO appearances, as I never got to play that game.

Welp, a PC version of Rise is confirmed for 2022. I guess that has signaled a commercial failure for the Switch version, as nearly everybody will now wait for the PC version instead.

you say that as if the announcement of mhworld pc killed the console versions from being profiteable, which hasn't really been the case.

Yeah, but since the PC version will likely have superior resolution and visuals, few will see a point in playing the Switch version. At the very least, Capcom should have waited until the Switch version released, as I feel that this early confirmation will damage the potential install base for the Switch version.

I actually think they planned to reveal this later, but that stupid leak from November changed their plans and rumors about the PC version never stopped as a result.

I'll give you that they likely didn't planned on revealing it that soon and that it might damage the playerbase - but I don't think the damage will be nearly as big as you might think.

Monster hunter has been a handheld console liftimer and the japanese fanbase who made up most of the playerbase until world came along seem to have a preference for handheld consoles in general, and the switch is a successfull enough console playing it on switch over a pc presents enough upsides some people may prefer it.

The impact will probably be more located in the playerbase who got into the franchise with world (which admittedly is HUGE, not gonna deny it) but then again, Rise had already rubbed quite a lot of those people the wrong way in looking like an awkward compromise between world and old-style MH.

Also, Fear Of Missing Out is a well-known societal phenomenon and waiting almost a year to play the game isn't something a lot of people will settle for, especially if the switch version gains traction around them and their friends starts playing it, because playing rise will become a regular activity among a friend group.

Lastly, I think that people who strongly wanted a PC port didn't really needed that announcement to decide to hold off the switch version ? even before the capcom leaks, I've been in the crowd of "i'd rather play it on pc" and I feel like there always was this expectation a pc version would pop up sooner or later, so I feel like this announcement doesn't change too much in that regard.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. Having to deal with trolls who will now laugh at Switch owners for the loss of exclusivity will be really tedious, however.

For what it's worth, if I get it, it'll be on Switch, since I'm just not a PC gamer.

I am a bit of a PC gamer, and I'm still getting Rise on the Switch. I like the idea of being able to play wherever I want.

Still, glad that people with a PC but no Switch will be able to enjoy the game as well.

A video of the Kamura Village felynes making dango popped up in my YouTube feed today. I always enjoy seeing food being made in the Monster Hunter games.

Apologies for the triple post, but a Monster Hunter digital event video was uploaded today with news from both Stories 2 and Rise.

    Stories 2 highlights
  • A couple new monsters have been confirmed to be in this game: Nergigante, Pukei-Pukei, and Mizutsune.
  • There will be co-op multiplayer, and the two riders can use kinship attacks at the same time.
  • The worldwide release date for the game is July 9, 2021.
  • There will be amiibo for three characters in the game: the wyverian girl Ena, Razewing Ratha, and the palico Tsukino.
  • There is a preorder bonus that gives a Kamura maiden outfit for Ena.
  • If you have save data from Monster Hunter: Rise, you can unlock a Kamura outfit for the protagonist.

    Rise highlights
  • Nargacuga and Zinogre officially make their appearances.
  • Zinogre and Mizutsune have a turf war.
  • Barroth shows up in this trailer; I don't remember if they showed up in previous trailers, though.
  • A glimpse of a new monster with a lower jaw that splits open. Seems like an endgame monster, considering the way its appearance is framed in the trailer.
  • Rampage mode seems to play like a tower defense game, where you have to choose where to place weapons around the fort before the monsters arrive.
  • A reveal of the first free update monster: Chameleos.
  • There will be a demo on March 11 where you can take on Magnamalo.

So glad to see Nargacuga made the cut (I never doubted that so would Zinogre, to be honest). By the way, has it been commented on whether all these base monsters will appear in Low Rank? If so, then this game will be meatier in its content than World, and gives me hype on what surprises might await in High Rank.

Just watched the trailer. I think I finally got the Japanese folklore inspiration for the Rampage: since many of the new monsters are based on yokai, I think this would be Rise's take on a Hyakki Yagyō, which is cool.

And, of course, that makes me think that our resident Elder Dragon will probably be inspired by a Nurarihyon, just to fit better.

Apart from that, Zinogre and Narga confirmation is always nice, even though everybody saw it coming long ago.

EDIT: And hi! It's been some time. :3

[up]The Japanese term for "The Rampage" in that game actually is based on the Hyakki Yagyou, so you are indeed correct. It's called the 百竜夜行.

As for what's causing the rampage, if that unnamed monster in the trailer is the thing featured in the game logo, there's a good chance it might be the thing causing it.

Never played Stories but I hear it's more like Pokemon than regular Monster Hunter? Looking forward to the sequel whenever we get that.

It's "like Pokémon" in that it's a turn-based Mons game, yes. Fun stuff.

"Fun" isnt exactly the word I'd use to describe Stories.

It's uber cute and the environments are strikingly beautiful for a 3DS game, but unfortunately the rest of the game exists.

It's RPS down to it's core, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but your monstie's actions are completely random, and telling them what to do costs your skill meter and you can't even do it all the time.

Among a bevy of other issues with random/absurd difficulty spikes, complete elemental imbalance, and the main gimmick (being able to turn any monstie into any element) is virtually completely useless.

A more minor note is that the story is hilariously bad, but I'll let it slide considering it was very clearly kid-focused.

I would never recommend Stories without some form of cheats available, if only because it's a slog without it.

Stories 2 at least looks just as gorgeous and (hopefully) fixes the issues in the gameplay department.

I didn't find it to be a slog at all, but to each their own.

The one major issue I had in Stories is that the localized version never got a major update that made monsters like the Rajang, Teostra, and Kushala Daora playable. I'm fairly optimistic that Stories 2 won't run into that particular issue, though.

[up]If I remember correctly, Stories 1 came out at that point where Nintendo was a bigger fan of MH games on Nintendo systems than Capcom was, so of course the localized version got the minimal support they could get away with.

After all, both Stories 1 and GU (which had a similar problem) had their localized versions published by Nintendo... something I'm glad isn't continuing with Rise.

We have a video of the Mizutsine vs. Zinogre turf war:

Also, the official Monster Hunter Rise website has a section where Minoto draws a few pictures to help explain some hunting techniques, which also solidify her as a big dork.

If it's possible to have Mizutsune and Almudron in the same field, a turf war between them would be interesting.

Will Mizu get dirty? Or will Almudron get clean? Irresistible force vs. immovable object.

Oh, does anyone know the exact time when the demo update will be released? Haven't seen anything in the eshop and no updates were available yet.

I haven't checked yet. My connection is quite paltry as of now (I barely managed to watch my Netflix series this morning). However, according to some early commentary on Youtube, there seems to be more about Magnamalo's power than meets the eye (such as being able to alter the behavior of other monsters even during the hunts). I'll verify once I update the demo on my system.
