I went entirety of one Sacred Stone playthrough and until the last chapter of my second playthrough without realizing that Natasha could be promoted to fight. I've had two Guiding Rings in my supply but the description ("for magic wielders and troubadours") doesn't mention clerics.

[up]I suppose they thought that players would make the association that "person who uses magic to heal others" = "magic user?"

Training Natasha to be able to promote is a massive pain anyway.

Casual runs typically have no issue promoting her if they're willing to promote her at level 10 or so. Game's probably already over if they wait until 20, though (unless they're using the tower/ruins).

[up](x3) I thought the ring was for characters who could already use spells, not healers. All my other magic wielders died within a few chapters of meeting them and I didn't care enough to replay the chapters to stop them from dying.

Edit:

The final boss of Sacred Stones is even easier than the YMMV page says. I had to restart once because I had Eirika fight him and she got one-shot, but then I tried again with just Ephraim and beat him in two turns. Seth died the previous chapter and I was so worried I saved in a different slot just in case, but I literally looked away from the screen and the boss was done.

367 turns in total and only 5 characters made it through the campaign. But at least this time I got Joshua and Natasha's good ending; in my original playthrough, Joshua died near the end.

Sacred Stones is the only FE game I've played and apparently the fandom has mixed feelings on it, but I really like the characters and plot. It's a shame there hasn't been another game in its continuity.

So am I the only one who found Raphael more effective than Lysithea?

Can Raphael use Warp?

[up][up]Yes. But seriously, your RNG must have been all sorts of wacky.

When Rapheal can nuke from a 5 space range then we can talk.

I haven't done Golden Deer yet, but Raph wound up much more useful to me than Lys in my Crimson Flower run because Lys didn't have enough time to snowball into a monster.

Not better than Lysithea, but Raph did grow into his own then I was still toying around with Hard. Like, he was getting trash levels, but he was still getting Str almost all the time, so I just made him a hard-line brave nuke with gauntlets. Didn't have the same range and versatility as Lysithea, but he could straight-up delete a number of things. Gonna see if I can get that rolling again on Maddening, but, uh, starting results have been less than impressive. It's bad enough that I actually detoured into Faith for him so I can feed him extra EXP via Heal spam (which is fine, since his mega-fisting build shouldn't require dipping into too many classes). >.>

Raph is a player-phase delete button with gauntlets. Anything goes down to him, often even armors thanks to lots of crit chances. But he takes longer to really get going while Lys has Warp and murders everything from 4 tiles away.

I'm in New Game+ to see what it's like, and I don't think I'll bother with it anymore in the future unless I have something dumb in mind, even when I do Maddening. Trying to avoid actually taking advantage of anything, but the statue bonuses carrying over just pushes me way too far.

Assuming he gets there, anyway. Part of the problem for me stems from even enemy healers having notable bulk on Maddening. When he does 2x4 with Iron Gauntlets and then gets doubled back for 2x8 from Nos, we, uh, have problems. As more of my ranged chip comes online, he might find some kills on Fighters, though. I mean, enemy Myrms and Thieves would be squishier and better targets, except that 30 Avoid makes his already iffy Hit even more of a liability.

My Lysithea was indeed cursed by the RNG. Only on two occasions did she get more than three stat increased on levelup, had terrible HP and Def, range 2, and overall was a tricky magikarp who needed quite a lot of babying and care to use effectively.

Raphael, on the other hand, got really good growths, especially in Str, and had decent Spd as well; his only real weakness was Res, and even then he had enough HP to tank a few magic attacks. Those muscles of his aren't just for show - mine was one-hitting enemy spellcasters with an axe and annihilating everyone else with gauntlets, with which he routinely quadrupled.

[up][up] Three Houses doesn't really leave a lot of room for that. Also, top-end Awakening isn't going anywhere relying on pre-promotes (though they do make good supplements in the cases of Libra, Anna and Basilio), but that's okay because Robin's a pretty absurd growth unit.

Also a little disappointed Marianne's Pokemon isn't a Lycanroc, what with her Crest having werewolf-like rumors surrounding it.

Just beat BL.

I'm the Pope! Dimitri is king of all of Fodlan with queen Marianne by his side! And I'm married to, of course, Dorothea! (I got her Goddess Tower scene so it felt right.) Also, poor Dedue ends up keeping watch over Dimitri's grave. Hanneman x Manuela, Linhardt x Annette, Cyril x Shamir, Ashe x Petra, Catherine x Caspar, Felix x Mercades, Sylvain x Ingrid, Lorenz x Leonie, Ferdinand x Hilda, Raphael x Bernadetta, Ignatz x Lysithia, and Seteth and Flayn somehow disappear and reappear into the future, while Alois and Gilbert are left to their own devices.

So fun! That last map was pretty hard too, I even died a few times. Good thing Casual Mode exists. Unfortunately I couldn't get every support done, I missed the timeline for Catherine x Gilbert and Catherine x Lorenz, and I didn't have enough time for Benedetta x Seteth or Raphael x Shamir.

On to Golden Deer! I wonder if Edelgard turning into a giant monster was just a BL thing or if it happens again on another route.

[up]Edelgard stays human. The final boss of Golden Deer breaks the mould in a few ways, and overall the final battle is quite interesting. The final boss is just a man. A tough, dangerous man, but still a man. However, he starts off surrounded by a force field, and to defeat him you have to first take out his 10 lieutenants.
