Yeah, it's much easier as Reimu. There's a few times where a homing shot is awkward, but many more where it's really useful. And it's not even a particularly good homing shot!
The stage 5 boss represents a major difficulty spike, and the game doesn't settle down like you'd normally expect for the final stage
As noted, the final boss does Okina's gimmick-cycling thing, but more so

I beat the game on Hard as Sakuya. Which is interesting. First time, accidentally picked wall-wrapping and nearly memed myself to death.

That's not at all surprising, imo. I think PC-98 in general is way more popular in the West, probably because we're used to downloading the games and emulators, while for your average Japanese person it'd be quite a pain to get your hands on either the games or the old machine to run them.

Orange: Shoots homing lasers by grazing, but regular shot is weaker. High risk shot, with even higher reward. In one hands it can be very OP.
Yellow: Additional options + bomb gauge increases faster. Something like extra power shot.
Green: Gradual movement speed increase + large item radius. Memes are coming. (Marisa Green Gem Un Focus, oh my-)
Aqua: Shot and bomb do splash damage. Does great damage on stages; not so useful on bosses tho.
Blue: Shot and bomb freeze enemies. I dunno how much it affects bosses tho, but it's not bad.
Violet: Basically, Yukari's SA warp. If you liked that, you won't be disappointed.
Regular grey crystals fill the bomb gauge; bombing turns them into colored crystals, which greatly increase score value + the super gauge. Focusing lets you vaccum up crystals easily. Conversely, staying unfocused lets you build up a lot of crystals on-screen and turn them colored all at once with a bomb. Lives are gained via score. Hitting C with the super gauge filled will activate a super-bomb that converts all bullets into colored crystals +doesn't use up any regular bombs and doesn't result in failed Spell Cards!
