If Maribel is Yukari's past self, then Renko is Reimu's distant ancestor, the power to navigate having been passed down and then changed into the power to not only navigate but to fly, Reimu taking it to the level of navigating beyond reach of attacks.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!^ Really not sure how the power to tell time and location relates to flight. Feels like a huge stretch imo.
Also the Renko=Reimu/Reimu's ancestor thing feels like a huge stretch too, given that there copious amounts of foreshadowing for Maribel/Yukari and yet the only thing even relating Renko and Reimu together is the fact that Renko once went "I feel like the protagonist of a shooting game!" in Trojan Green Asteroid which itself is a rather vague statement of sorts. The whole thing seems like a cheap way to give Maribel a happy(ish) ending of sorts after being trapped in the past or something.

I still think the details are too vague to say anything other than "Maribel and Yukari are related in some manner". Hell, they might be literally related, as there is an often forgotten line in one of the stories where Mary notes that her powers (at least, the initial border seeing ones) are hereditary.
I guess it's like, as her powers evolve is Mary turning into Yukari, or is Mary turning into a second Yukari?
It doesn't help that we know that "Yukari Yakumo" wasn't her original name anyway.
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.@Ace of Scarabs: Reimu always seems to travel in the right direction to find whatever she's looking for... Now note that Renko is a "scientist" who uses her powers in a highly specific manner (she can't even get different timezones), while Reimu relies on Don't Think, Feel...
So clearly Renko is Yuyuko.

While I do have a pet peeve about people taking theories like Maribel and Yukari being related for granted, I've always wanted to write a story where it's revealed that Yukari did something that pushed a Reset Button on the universe, like The Scratch in Homestuck, and Maribel is her new-universe counterpart. I just don't know where I'd go with this idea other than a literal Homestuck crossover.
I make video games! Or plan to, anyway. If that is the case, where Gensokyo is pre-scratch universe and modern horrible tokyo is post-scratch, then there should probably be a bunch of characters associated with Maribel that are vaguely but not entirely reminiscent of other Touhou important people.
That would be a lot of OCs.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMy personal pet theory RE: Merryberry/Yukari is that Yukari is Merry's distant direct ancestor. Like however many millenia ago, Yukari had a kid that spawned Merry's family tree. Now Merry's blood ties are letting her see that which should not be.
Although a relatively recent thought I had was relating Merry to Kosuzu. Power that works through their eyes that are slowly taking over their lives and bringing them eerily out of touch with humanity through a dangerous fascination on worlds and beings of myth? Sure, it's -probably- a coincidence, but it's fun to speculate on what relationship those two might have. Maybe Kosuzu seriously mucks up soon and gets booted outside Gensokyo.
Hair colors be damned XD
I write some fanfiction. Satori's Tale is done... but I'm not.I never considered the angle of Gensokyo being the remains of the "pre-scratch" universe. My idea was Yukari being the only character we've actually met (so far) who was from the old world. But if you were going to make a work that put more focus on Mary and Renko in the outside world, you'd probably need a healthy palette of OCs to flesh out the world anyway; making them all analogues to more familiar characters could keep readers interested in the new characters.
I make video games! Or plan to, anyway."Your name is MIA RUTHERFORD and you're kind of a night bird."
Forever liveblogging the AvengersSpeaking of Maribel...here's a WMG that I thought several months ago, but completely forgot just until now.
However, what if, they were humans from the past? Their world was so technologically advanced that every mystery of the world has been solved, and even the supernatural can be explained by science. Because they have known everything, the humans forgot their fear and became arrogant and careless. Through this, an Apocalypse How ranging from Class 3 to Class 5 happened, destroying their civilization.
There were survivors, however. These survivors, horrified of the apocalypse, seeks a pure land freed from death and impurity: The Moon. They traveled to the moon and built a pure, deathless civilization there. We know them as the Lunarians. Among these was Eirin Yagokoro.
The apocalypse didn't end all life, however. Some species survived, and continued to live and evolve, effectvely resetting the world. Humans once again rise to sapience and started civilization again.
The Lunarians weren't the only survivors. There were other group of people that refused to go to the moon, and instead stayed on Earth. Knowing that the lack of fear of the unknown was what brought the old world's destruction, they turned themselves into the 'unknowns' themselves, and kept the humans from finding out the secrets of the 'unknown'. They were then called gods, demons, monsters, youkai, etc.
Yet, human civilization keeps advancing. Realizing humans would soon know of the 'unknowns' at that rate, one of them, erected a barrier to keep the unknowns as unknowns. The land inside the barrier, where humans keep fearing the unknown, is acting as a failsafe in case that the humans outside repeat the mistake and destroyed the world again. The one who came up with this was Maribel Hearn, now adopting the name of Yukari Yakumo.
Any confusion is explained with magic/extremely advanced civilization.

Japan loves ancient civilizations that get destroyed and/or flee to the moon leaving behind only giant turtles or puzzle games to confuse archeologists.
They loves em so hard. Mu, Atlantis, Solaria. If humanity used to be smarter and more advanced than they are now in contradiction to everything that is known about history, archeology, and anthropology, they are all over that.
They think its neat.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI like Seija's last spell card just because it utilizes the whole screen.
I must admit, its sad that the video only had one spellcard for Kokoro. Its no fair for her not been in ICS (and Suika being in there).
Who is the girl before Lolice?
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru! The God knows what? The world? Is this leading to a dating sim/visual novel featuring Kokoro as the main character?
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!God knows the Muse's theme and can totally rock it on castanet.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI would add to Bocaj's point that there have been many great feats of engineering, philosophy and civic organization throughout the world that were destroyed and then historically erased. Nothing like magical spaceships and monbases, but bustling cities of tens of thousands, towering monuments, bits of math and physics the West wouldn't get to in centuries and flush toilets? Hell yeah.
(Also, I can't help but picture the Lunarians as the Moonrace now.)

'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Too bad! It was just PTSD!
Fixed.
