[up]Ooh, interesting. I really should finish V sometime soon before I pick this up (assuming it gets localized, of course).

Would also be nice if the three elemental dragons come back, since they were absent in V. Though I wonder what the superboss will be?

Isn't this actually the tenth Etrian Odyssey game, though?

[up]Hmm... 5, plus two remakes, plus two each of two spinoffs... Well, if you don't count the two remakes, then yes, it's the 10th EO game. If you do count them, it's number 12.

The two remakes counted? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1U, 2U, EMD, and EMD 2.

Hot damn! I knew that they were going to have some sort of crossover as a last hurrah for the series on the 3DS but I didn't think that they were going to go all in on it.

I'm suddenly super motivated to finish 100 percenting the other EO games I have.

Persona Q is more of a Persona game in an Etrian Odyssey style than a title in the series.

[up]Eh, slap a different coat of paint on it, and the only thing making it different from a normal EO game is the lack of player-made characters. Otherwise... Yeah, it's a Persona-themed EO game.

(And I feel it fits in better with EO than EMD does.)

So Etrian Odyssey X showed up in the newest issue of Famitsu and here's the scans of it's article.

Edit: This article has some translations of the interview in the Famitsu article in it.

One of the scans shows the hippo monster from the third game. Looking forward to seeing if any of the other third game monsters will show up.

oh man this has me excited

my only concerns, though, are that it looks like some of the modern EO styles are going to clash with older EO games. Just look at the differences between the EO 1 character arts vs the EO IV or even III arts. i kinda wish they made all new art for each class, though.

also, is that a new class i see? what are those two classes at the end, they look kind of like the patissier from Bravely Second? are they also new classes?

I also wonder if these are all the classes we will have access to? It would be kinda lame to only have two classes from V, though I'll fully admit that many of them were reskins of old classes so eh. at the very least they seem to be capturing all the most interesting classes from each game, albeit there are inevitably going to be some similar ones.

so happy to see that each class is going to be as customizable as it was in V, though! it's been like my favorite part.

kinda disappointed at the lack of an overworld like in IV though. it was entertaining.

edit: well, fuck me. i got [nja]'d so hard by an edit [lol] that answers most of my questions

[up]The DLC classes are existing classes. One of the is the medic from the first game, while the one with the rolling pin is the farmer class from the third game. Farmer class was not that good for fighting, but it did specialize in gathering materials (I think...it's been a while since I played the third game).

I did it! I finally defeated Eternal Tyrant!

Right now I'm exploring floor 26. Four of my characters are at level 70. Can you please tell me how far do I need to go in order to find the first Bonus Boss that raises your cap? Thanks in advance! smile

EDIT: Talking about EO V, by the way.

Finally cleared the first stratum in EO V! finally...

Just a handful of scattered thoughts, so

first and foremost is that this seems rather brutal compared to what I've experienced with what little of experienced in EOU and definitely more brutal than the early game of EO IV. I found myself trekking back to town constantly and then not having enough money to stay at the inn, so I had to muscle through the stratum abusing the TP restoring union skill. Is it just Early Game Hell due to the lack of Skill Points and Money to throw around, or is the whole game going to be like this? Either way, I'm definitely excited for the challenge.

Speaking of, the first stratum boss caught me off guard and it was actually kind of fun. i lost my first try due to not knowing of the whole exploding thing, but my second try got me the win. my botanist definitely pulled her weight, but surprisingly my dragoon really... didn't. He died just as quick as my Therian Fencer and Masurao, but I'd be lying if I said his defensive skills didn't help out a ton.

Regarding team comp- I was trying to build my Fencer around his chain skills (Since I absolutely loved Links in EO IV) and quickly found them a lot harder to abuse due to needing the same element (and, yknow, not being able to attack when using a chain unlike with links). As such, I'm wondering if it's even worth building into the chain legendary title once i get those. It seems like the only class in this game that really uses elemental attacks are the warlocks, and if I only have one on the team it means that I'm only going to chain once which seems kind of useless.

In turn, this means I'd have to build into the evade build of Fencer. I'm not totally against it, but having an evade tank AND the dragoon as a physical tank seems kind of excessive. So I'd probably change out the dragoon for a harbringer for (hopefully) more damage output and definitely more status ailment infliction- but I'm still worried about dropping my dragoon, especially when the first stratum could be so rough.

In any case, I'm mildly disappointed with chain skills since the warlock is the only class that has a focus on elemental damage, and having more than one warlock seems super lame.

So tl;dr:

  • Is it Early Game Hell, or am I in for a serious ass-kicking in this game?
  • Should I give up on building a chain Fencer and just go for the evade tanking build?
  • If I do, should I replace my dragoon with a Harbringer?

For the record, right now my team is: Therian Fencer, Therian Masurao, Earthlain Dragoon in front, Celestrian Warlock and Brouni Botanist in back. I'm also playing on Advanced Difficulty, but I'm not sure how it's different from Basic.

early game hell, almost definitely.

a lot of early game skills seem to be preparation for prestige-class skills, and from what ive heard of the chain skills, they dont start off useful, but once you stick your foot firmly in the door of maybe the 2nd or 3rd stratum, they become great.

since theres an early game item that lets you share exp, i went with dodge-tank first and just made back-up builds of each class to pull out whenever i need em.

my basic thinking is, even throughout just the first stratum there were cases where dodge-tanks werent as valuable as proper tanks, sometimes i needed binds more than direct damage or magic, and in the case of the stratum 1 boss, i swapped out my tank for a harbinger, my shaman (who is all around too expensive for early game) for a botanist, and my dodgetank for...either the monk or the murasao, cant remember which. so basically having an alternative to swap out whenever is needed seems likely to be valuable throughout the entire game.

...yeesh. my first run against the boss was not a well put together team comp at all.

[up][up] Yeah, EO in general is big on Early Game Hell, and everyone is still in the Magikarp phase of Magikarp Power, especially the Fencer.

@party comp/Chain Fencer: Stab attacks can also trigger chains. The Masurao's Armor Pierce skill is a stab attack, I think that normal attacks with guns are too (which covers your Dragoon, but his attack skills will do bash damage)(EDIT: Just checked, guns are bash damage all around), and you can also give your Botanist a bow to activate chains with, meaning that everyone three party members have a way of activating chains. But yeah, Chain Fencers are pretty much something you have to build your party around. And you're right that having both a dodge tank and a Dragoon is a bit overkill on the defensive side.

To your question, either party (Chain Fencer+Dragoon, or Dodge Fencer+Harb) can work, although either way it probably won't really pick up until you get the Masteries and enough SPs to fill out all the good stuff. Harbinger, in particular, is pretty much dead weight until the 3rd stratum, unfortunately.

harbinger doesnt especially shine but does decent enough damage towards the end of the first stratum at least, and is itself not a bad pick for the boss (aoe and ailment + damage). dodge-tanking is actually pretty great early on, but the problem is that one failure results in a KO that you cant easily rectify at that point in the game, and it only works on single-target attacks, so once enemies with aoe start appearing it becomes less valuable imo.

Are these the only Union Skills worth investing in? Trying to optimize my point usage.

- Earthlain: Tri-Shield, Black Mist, Determination

- Celestrian: Game Changer, Tri-Magic, Chain Blast

- Therian: Wide Swing, Binding Force

- Brouni: Guard Order, Superspeed, Hygieia's Bowl, Aegis Shield

To be honest, I think that's too many. I personally never needed anything other than Chain Blast, full stop. I can't really see a need for more than 1 per character at most.

[up] and [up][up]: Yeah, that's going a bit overboard with Union skills. Hygeia's Bowl has pulled my party out of too many tight spots to want to go without it though, and Black Mist is essential if you're rolling with a bind/ailment specialized party

Breezing through the second stratum- man chain skills are really coming in handy. They're easily doubling my party's damage output now that I know stab attacks also build the chain (and, yknow, i've got more SP to throw around).

I get the legendary titles at the end of this stratum right? I might want to start hoarding SP for right now until I get those- I've run out of skills that I want to build (due to SP costs being too much to continue upgrading or not wanting the other skills available) so it's not that big a deal anyway.

Also: it's rare that I don't want to try and solve a puzzle in one of these, but the tengus and the rock puzzles were starting to irritate me (due to the very large area sizes) so I ended up just killing all the tengu FOEs in the large room rather than work around them.

They were surprisingly easy- the summoned enemies were generally weak, they missed a lot, and I had a dragoon to just set up walls and keep tanking damage such that I was never worried. They took a little bit to actually kill, but they died easy enough.

I might kill the giraffe FOEs too if they're as easy as the tengus, if only for equipment.

edit: looking at the skills for a shaman, and i'm really tempted to make a shaman character now- mixing Chain Fencer's chain skills and Blade Dancer's Hell Slash with Shaman's Prayer Skills to imbue element...

problem is that means replacing either my Dragoon, Warlock, or Botanist with a Shaman, and all have been incredibly useful.

edit edit: nevermind, it seems that chain fencer's skills proc hell slash and not the other way around, so a shaman isn't really necessary outside of giving damage buffs.

however this DOES raise the concern of needing a main attacker if I'm having two chasers. My warlock could work, but Pugilist looks like it'd fit absolutely perfectly right on the team. The question is, however, who I'd replace. Dragoon seems like the most likely option, but then I completely lose my defensive wall who just helped me beat 2-3 FOEs attacking me at once.

wait, totally didn't consider that Pugilist does non-elemental bash damage and not stab damage. so that wouldn't work unless I had a shaman to imbue him with elemental damage...

...

this is getting out of hand- it would mean changing two of my party members to Pugilist and Shaman- meaning I'd lose either Dragoon, Warlock, or Botanist. I don't want to lose Dragoon because of that sick defense, I don't want to lose Warlock because she's my main source of magic and AOE damage, and I don't want to lose Botanist because I like having a healer to make my team live forever.

buuuuuut it does seem that omnimancer warlock has an AOE stab skill that could work. it has a lower damage output than elemancer, which i wanted to use, but omnimancer might end up being a lot more useful for my team AND allow me to keep my team comp.

Decisions, decisions...

[up] You can always do what I did and Rest your party after getting the Legendary Titles in order to get a Skill Point Reset (and incidentally, after you get the Titles, Resting will clear them and allow you to choose a new one if desired). And as merciless as the series is, it's extremely difficult to create a party that is completely incapable of handling almost everything the Labyrinth throws at them (though you might need to make some changes for the Bonus Bosses).
