So a part of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Rebellion got spoiled for me. Cima's lieutenant, dude with the open shirt, ends up using the Lili Marleen to protect the Gerbera tetra from the Solar System II's blast, ultimately dying in the process.

And I really like this change. The Lili Marleen not being destroyed by Kou makes him more sympathetic and not a loser who shot the people who were supposed to be helping him. And it kind of tracks too as Cima had nothing to do with Burning's death in this version. Cima's lieutenant has a more notable death scene rather than simply dying by being sucked into space by Gato smashing the bridge. And it's another good moment for Bask as he'd totally stab the Cima fleet in the back. It also better explains what happened to them, as they were the victims of the solar system II instead of just assumably dying to Kou and the Delaz troops.

Finally saw the movie.

It was decent. It suffered from ya know first movie syndrome so it took a while to really kick in gear especially since there was only 2 Mobile Suit fights in the film.

A bit too much time setting up Hathaway, Kenneth, and Gigi but overall picks up pretty well past the 30 minute mark though admitably I find Gigi kinda annoying.

Hopefully next movie has some fights in bright daytime cause I really wanna make out the details of the Xi Gundam and the Penelope. Those things are so massive and cluttered in design its hard to em out.

So, apparently, the reason behind all the really weird names in Tomino-directed Gundam series is because he was trolling Bandai.

Somehow I'm not surprised.

My headcanon for the weird names is that most Gundam series are so far in the future that naming culture changed with it, and names that seem silly today would be perfectly acceptable then.

Well, this is an interesting turn of events. I'm a little worried that the UI is a wee bit too close to Overwatch's.

Question: Is there a Gundam game where you can move freely in space, something like Star Wars Squadron?

Also, I was reading a review for Gundam Zeta and the person wrote this when talking about the animation: (the Mk-II getting tangled in the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge is a highlight). Mabye I missed because I only watched the movie version but is there a video of it online?

[up] Free movement in space, not really no. The Gundam vs Zeta Gundam series probably come closest being Virtual-ON clones.

Ahem. Gundam Vs Series.

Technically, it started with Federation Vs Zeon, but movement there was a lot more restrictive.

Edit: Although, I should point out off the top of my head that there have been a few Console games that allowed movement in space, though I can't name them all.

There is also Gundam Battle Operation 2, which has space levels, although that's more your typical four axis of movement with ascent and descent controls.

The Psycho Zaku really sums up Zeon doesn't it?

"Give it up to the Principality of Zeon for creating an overpowered Zaku that costs a ton, cannot be mass produced, or even piloted unless you're missing all four appendages."

Yeah sure it could fight a Gundam on equal ground but its even more expensive than a Gundam and incredibly impractical at that.

I think that's the wrong take. It was a back-alley tech testbed scraped together out of whatever they had lying around the hangar, using the cheapest resources available. It used a pilot with missing limbs because Zeon was stuck with a lot of people with missing limbs, and they wanted to find a way to make lemonade out of lemons. It encapsulates Zeon's exhaustion and desperation at the end of the war, not their hubris, and is deliberately contrasted with the sleek, custom-made, incredibly advanced Full Armour Gundam, the product of a war economy so flush with resources that they could hand out bleeding-edge death-machines like candy.

And not to mention, it was a very desperate move made with a little bit of pragmatism. After all, Daryl was kinda 3/4 of the way there for being the proper pilot of the Psycho Zaku, especially since they had his data from the original test machine.

Thats prolly my favorite bit about Thunderbolt.

How the Gundam is treated and showcased as a nigh unstoppable death machine with Io getting a similar reputation. Its first outing where it was effectively the grim reaper or when Fisher crapped his pants when he heard jazz music was phenomenal.

Goes to show ya what happens when you have high-specs Gundamn piloted by a damn good pilot.

Yeah. Io's really neat as a protagonist. It's cool when Gundam follows a main pilot with prior experience.

I find it weird that we don't see more Gundams in Thunderbolt. Unlike, say, theAtlas that is truly bleeding edge, the Full Armor isn't much more than "a GM, but more." More weapons, more subarms, more thrusters, more armor. And since those are literally the only two Gundams we've seen in this continuity (aside from the Ground Gundam which is an upgraded GM or the Perfect Gundam which is... its own can of worms) I would love to see what a "vanilla" Gundam looks like in this continuity.

The Perfect Gundam seems to be modeled after the RX-78-2, does that even exist in this continuity? What does it look like? Given how different the GM is from the GM in the regular UC continuity I'd genuinely like to know.

I mean, it's kinda obvious that it still does. I mean, you can easily fit the White Base and Char's exploits into the Thunderbolt continuity. Hell, the original Full Armour Gundam in MSV is vastly different from the Gundam that we see in the original show and films. I mean, that version was green, for crying out loud.

The Full Armor Gundam is basically just the RX-78 and the G-Armor merged into a single unit. It's an obvious next-step technological advance from the TV Gundam.

I mean, I know it does but I just really want to see it. Does it look like the naked Full Armor Gundam? Surely it must have subarms of some type given even Zakus have them but I'm just so curious. I'm assuming it looks like the naked Full Armor with the GM's backpack but I'd like to see it.

Not really.

... it might actually make you more confused because Char's apparent Heel–Face Turn in Zeta and interactions with Amuro don't suuuuuuuuuuuuuper jive with his CCA self. I mean, they certainly can if you spend some time thinking about it but... honestly a lot of Zeta was Rule of Cool fanservice that didn't necessarily make a lot of sense.

CCA was deliberately written to be accessible even if all you've seen is the MSG movie trilogy, so Zeta and ZZ are definitely optional.

Char's development from MSG to Zeta and CCA is only confusing if you think of it as "he became a good guy during Zeta". But that's not really what happened. Char's goals never really change, it's just that during Zeta they (mostly) align with the protagonists, so he ends up working with them. Once that particular situation is resolved and their goals no longer align, he goes back to being an antagonist.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

I mean. Yes and no. You're roughly right in a vague reading but Quattro is also more of a genuinely heroic figure than Char ever is. His mentorship of Kamille is easily the most "altruistic" relationship he's had in the entire meta series (only possibly rivalled by Sayla but that has so much baggage I am not getting into it). I genuinely can't see Quattro throwing Kamille under the bus for a very minor advantage as Char would absolutely do to anyone below him.

Also, there's cause and effect. From a Watsonian perspective, Char is a on the good side because they align with his perspective. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut you can you really deny that from a Doylist perspective, the good guys align with him at least partially because the anime wanted to go "what if Char was a hero?!?" This is from a series that features "a Gundam beats up Zakus" despite the fact that the Zakus are no on the side that exists solely to hunt down Zeon remnants.

I mean, sure, you could argue that Char was trying to make things better in Zeta, but considering he got absolutely thrashed by Haman, and unless you subscribe to the theory that what happened to Kamille is what drove Char off into the direction he went in CCA, I think he just reached a super-low point. Having said that, though, the Titans are rendered inconsequential anyway, so it's not a total Continuity Lockout.
