How about splitting metal into traditional, extreme, and alternative?
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt." - Some guy with a snazzy hat.Alternative metal is pretty iffy, even among tropers. There's a reason there's not much discussion about Faith No More in the Metal topic, aside from the fact they haven't released any new music in a decade.
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt." - Some guy with a snazzy hat.Having 3 threads where 1 would work is unnecessary.
last.fmSo would all of electronic music be lumped under one label, too?
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt." - Some guy with a snazzy hat.^ I think it should be, personally. Same with metal; however, a problem arises if/when someone wants to recommend a Slipknot album.
I know I'm kind-of repeating the alt-metal comment, but the alt-metal example used before is at least generally agreed to be metal, unlike Slipknot.
last.fm | RYMI'd be willing to contribute to this.
I think we could probably avoid a lot of genre wankery by considering alt metal a subgenre of alt rock. It's not technically inaccurate, and I think rock fans are less likely to shun it than metalheads, right?
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffIn my experience, most alt-metal bands are more alt-rock than metal, so this is a solution I can get behind.
I've just had a scary thought: where do we put The Melvins? Metal, alt-rock, punk?
last.fm | RYMDoes anyone seriously like the Melvins? Indie cred aside?
Anyhow, I'd split metal to "metal for people who thought the Black Album was the first sign of the genre's decay" and "metal for people who don't really care", since it seems the metal fans here are split into these camps, but... yeah.
I was about to say that I'd agree to putting alt. metal in alt. rock, but then I'd be agreeing to discussing Helmet and Deftones as alt. rock bands. Hell naw.

If I'm to put up with country music, you can put up with alt metal. >:|
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffSo:
- Classical
- Musical Theatre and Soundtracks
- Jazz and Blues
- Folk, World and Country
- Funk, Soul and Classic RnB
- Classic Rock
- Alternative/Indie Rock
- Metal
- Punk
- Pop
- Hip-Hop
- Electronic
- Reggae, Dub and Ska
Is this the list we're settling on?
While typing this post, I had a thought as to where progressive rock would go. I don't think we need a prog-rock category; most prog-rock bands I can think of could fit into other genres, such as Classic Rock (King Crimson, Rush), Metal (Dream Theater, Opeth) and possibly Alt/Indie Rock (Coheed and Cambria, The Mars Volta). Anyone agreed?
EDIT: There's also experimental music, which I would give the same treatment as prog-rock.

last.fm | RYMProg rock is just experimental rock. I see no reason why it should have its own thread.
Yeah, I'd be inclined to file experimental music under whatever genre tradition it springs out of.

Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffWhat would you file experimental tape music like :zoviet*france: or Iannis Xenakis under, then? Electronic?
edited 13th Jul '10 4:36:17 AM by Litis
^ Wouldn't Xenakis come under Classical (albeit incredibly avant-garde classical)? He did study under Olivier Messiaen...
Listen to Music with Tropers at The Troper Turntable!:zoviet*france: would be Electronic. Xenakis I'm not entirely sure of, but I'll side with Saeglopur and place him in Classical. Mind you, all I did was check The Other Wiki, so I may be wrong.
Sorry if I sound impatient, but when are these threads going to be made? When we've sorted out the genres?
edited 13th Jul '10 5:18:03 AM by Lordnecronus
last.fm | RYMWait a minute these are all going to be threads? This forum is gonna get friggin clogged with this list!
"I could eat a knob at night" - Karl PilkingtonOne more thing: What about Singles and E Ps? Especially since, in electronic music, musicians are more apt to release several releases of one song and a few remixes per year than actual albums. Can we still put these under here?
im in yor baes, sappin yor sentrysFor that matter, are we listing classical albums, or just the compositions?
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI don't think EPs should count. Most songs on an EP are on another album, and albums are the primary means of artists making music. Singles DEFINITELY should not count. One song does not make a band good, or shouldn't anyway.
I can work with the genre list Lordnecronus created, as it seems to be fairly inclusive and will probably work better than the 5 or 6 I had in mind.
My God, big no to splitting metal into Metal and Death Metal. Death Metal is just one subgenre among so many other metal subgenres. It would be an utter disservice to do that.
I think that a bunch of topics for each genre should be created, but then deleted after a short while (a week). Then the results can be immediately complied into a single (hopefully pinned) thread that we can all view with pleasure.
Oh, and this hasn't come up, but one album per artist/band/group, please. Moar diversity that way, even though I sorta like the idea of recommending more than one. (Mostly with Boards of Canada because they are awesome /fanboy)
So do we all agree to start this off, then?

http://www.last.fm/user/BlueGhost60Will the mods agree to this?
I spread my wings and I learn how to fly....Why do we need to delete the threads? We'd need Fast Eddie for that, and he's busy enough as it is.
I could lock them, I suppose, if necessary. Why, though?
