Episode 1 was excellent. Beautiful animation, good pacing and a nice mix of action and comedy. I didn't watch the previous OVAs so this is the first time I have seen the series animated and so far it is looking very good.

Episode 1 was great. The main character is just badass, and the idea of sending historic figures to another world is very interesting.

Episode 2: Beautifully choreographed violence with a lot of blood and some morality thrown in for good measure. Scipio and Hannibal were as fun as ever and I liked the negative effect used on the corridor when Easy turned up. I also absolutely love that opening.

Not sold on the OP and ED so far. I digged the music in the PV trailer.

The OP, however, is glorious for rendering the manga frames in beautiful color.

I thought the first episode started off good but once he met nobunaga it got kind of lame. I always thought the super deformed "comedy" parts of Hellsing were by far it's worst parts and Drifters seems to have the same issue, with the adaption adapting it as well. I don't have patience for crappy forced "humor' that isn't funny. Does episode 2 tone it down at least?

This really is written be the author of Hellsing. The second episode was brutal. The main character is insane, the bad guys are some racists fucks, and there's some conflict between higher beings behind all of this. What a ride!

I'm guessing they will turn the elves into their army. They probably won't have much problems with recruiting, since they probably want some payback.

[up][up]From what I recall from watching the OVA yes the tone does shift to a more serious one later on. Episode 2 has a rather interesting if disturbing storyline (if it's about that elf village that lynched that racist human commander for killing their young men and taking their women for little to no reason while using them as slaves

I'm watching the second episode with friends and the one question on our minds: what language are the locals speaking? It's obviously not Japanese, but it's also obviously a language, or else how could they subtitle it?

EDIT:. A bit of looking suggests it is a made up language, but the original Japanese has Japanese subtitles which aren't part of the original video, which lets translators sub without having the Japanese subs in the way

Looks like episode 4's title will be "Active Heart," which is a song from Gunbuster. Have the previous episodes also had anime song titles like the manga chapters, or is this something newish to the anime?

The manga chapter titles have all been references to either Anime OP songs, or popular music. Though it's not obvious, as the titles usually swap out a word for more punning.

I know that. I was asking if the first couple anime episodes also followed that scheme since the announced title for episode 4 does match a song I happen to know.

Episode 3 was very good with some great action that introduces the bag guys very well. Seeing Joan in action was probably my personal highlight but the entirety of the Black King's army were handled very well.

On Black Kings identity to those who don't know the omakes do have them mention they have no intention of revealing his identity for fear of complaints. Amongst other things mentioned he didn't have a job till his 30s, looked like Johnny Depp and lived in Japan (Saint Young Men starring Buddha and JC) and that he revived Bruce Lee and Miyamoto Musashi (Strongest Man, Ryu).

So it will likely be kept a mystery till the end despite all the obvious clues.

Black King army is hardcore. The Ends have some cool powers, especially Anastasia. The army also seems to be well organized. And I like how Black King dresses in white. Keeps them on their toes.

Episode: Is Black King actually Jesus? Because that's what I'm starting to suspect.

Also, the constant Mood Whiplash are kinda killing the pacing of the story, we constantly jump from a serious scene to a joke and back.

That guy's been the prime suspect ever since the corresponding scene appeared in the manga years(?) ago. The Ends seem to have in common deaths by betrayal, or dying in circumstances that make them hate humanity, and there are few betrayals quite so famous.

I just can't get used to a beardless Rasputin. It's just unnatural.

It'd be hilarious if Hirano ends the series with a reveal that this was all just what Alucard meant by "killing the lives inside myself" or whatever he said at the end of Hellsing.

I mentioned above they are even pointing it out in the Omakes, but to not piss people off he will likely not reveal it. If he doesn't change it to someone else just to have a The Reveal later.

Episode 5 was another brilliant episode with some great action and the usual Mood Whiplash comedy. I was expecting them to censor the ending a little but it is pretty much as it was from the manga so that was good. The only problem with the episode was that for the second one in the row there was no opening so as it is my favourite of the series here it is again.

The last scene was a terrible thing to see, but it did manage to get my feelings in sync with the main character. Kill them all and throw their bodies into shit! Don't cut their heads tho. Fucking trash doesn't deserve any kind of proper burial.

Though I have to say, so far the series done nothing to show that Black King isn't right and humanity shouldn't be eradicated.

Should expect as much when the guy preaching is a Johnny Depp lookalike who turned water into wine and was a carpenter.
