I figure I might be swimming up stream here, but there's something about this trope that just doesn't sit with me. I put this up over on the Trope talks forum and I'm noticing a few things. The trope is about wars that are mentioned, and might be briefly shown through a few split second screens, but is ultimately never discussed in great detail. A Noodle Incident for wars in other words.

However, Such a situation doesn't only cover wars. The example I used was from Cowboy Bebop. All the criteria of this trope is used to describe Spike, Vicious, Gren, and Julia's past lives in the War on Titan and in the Red Dragon Syndicate. That is: None of these are ever truly talked about and explained in detail, but there are brief scenes depicting what they were.

Someone said that there are other tropes to describe this type of situation, but there isn't. Noodle Incident is about something that is mentioned but is never explained or shown for any reason. The description itself is that it is "too ludicrous for words." Obviously, showing even brief scenes of what it was discredits it from being a Noodle Incident.

Cryptic Background Reference doesn't really fit either, as it seems like these are throw-away plot elements that a writer *COULD* go back to expand upon if they want or need too.. or perhaps I'm not understanding it correctly.

Looking over the list of entries on the page, almost all of them are correctly being used to refer to an actual war. This is the one that wasn't exactly a war, but still a conflict.

  • Not exactly a war, but Avatar The Last Airbender has the Fire Nation's destruction of the Air Nomads 100 years prior to the start of the series.

I don't know. I think there needs to be something to include non-war examples, even if I can only think of one such example. I know there are others out there.. or maybe I'm just making a fool of myself here and should just go back to editing Tron Legacy for the night.

How is "the Fire Nation's destruction of the Air Nomads 100 years prior" not exactly a war?

A war of conquest is still a war.

If Cryptic Background Reference really is the supertrope here, then I think it fits your purposes adequately.

Rhymes with "Protracted."
