This person is very blatantly trolling, guys. This is just Twentington's Skyrim posts with even less effort.

More like the game makes fun of the chuds. There's even a very tongue-in-cheek magazine that has one of the quips about "Slayer outrage".

Kittybeth, you wanna discuss anything else? How's the shooting and platforming for ya?

Here, I'll leave this here

"trans" means "between."

Just because the emphasis in the word is on "trans" doesn't mean it's transphobic.

You're not hated by DOOM Eternal, the game doesn't hate you. Trans-dimensional means something else entirely, it's not transphobic or anything

Alright, while everyone is talking about Eternal I'm gonna talk about 64 because that's what I have on my Switch.

Not only is the intro missing. I also don't see the story expositions. I'm not sure if this is because I didn't sign in to the Bethesda account.

You don't have the Doom trilogy?

Gonna shill a bit, but if you do get it, the Classic Doom games also get well made mission packs like TNT Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment for Doom I or No Rest For The Living for Doom II. But they also did something cool, and included a fan-made PWAD called Double Impact for Doom I.

It's like an episode replacement of Thy Flesh Consumed except you can play both. Level design is great, the atmosphere and lighting and pseudo-dynamic lighting is terrific as well. Careful tho, levels are sprawling and massive. The theme, the aesthetic is Episode 1 inspired but with lots of blue, dark areas and hints of demonic corruption growing.

I love Double Impact. I recommend it to anyone who plays OG Doom.

Anyway onto Doom 64, I doubt it had any text intermission screens in the original

Yeah, back in those days the game's entire story would be in the manual or something.

I think I'll only play the original trilogy on the Switch, if I decide to play Doom 1 and 2 after 64.

[up]Truly a timeless classic.

Anyways, I'm curious to know what difficulty levels you are all playing on. 2016 on Ultra-Violence felt perfect, and I'm tempted to try Eternal on Nightmare, but impressions seems divided between it being an unrelenting intense thrill, or an unrelenting pain in the ass.

Also I have Doom 64 on Switch and the intro was definitely there.

I'm actually shameless in admitting that I play HMP on all the Doom games I've played so far.

I'm going HMP for the first run. Gotta say, though, there's a specific enemy that is just so much harder to deal with than the others. I was doing fine until this guy showed up.

I have a very specific design complaint with this game that probably sounds ridiculous and nitpicky, but it bothered me from the moment the enemy type was introduced.

Doom Hunters. Nothing about them as enemies takes advantage of their backstory as an ancient race of immensely talented hunters. That's why they were brought back after all, right? they're insanely dangerous, only now moreso with the help of added cybernetics.

Everything they do is based around their cybernetics though. They have energy shields, chainsaw arms, lock-on equipped missile launchers, energy turrets. They're essentially floating weapons platforms. Which begs the question of why this specific race was needed at all. You could have had a hell knight or a Baron torso on top of all these guns and it would be much the same thing.

I took it that it was meant as an insult. Because we get Marauders later. So corrupted hunters are absolutely a thing and absolutely a pain.

[up][up]they went extinct the first time, so no amount of cybernetic enhancements will help them when Slayer gets to them tongue

Didn't that Hell Priest hope that the cybernetic enhancements would be what the hunters needed to give them an edge against the Slayer?

I mean, the Slayer has a lot of guns, so it stands to reason that the Doom Hunter was outfitted with the weapons because anyone smart enough to have a good go at hunting the Slayer would be able to use the new tools effectively.

[up] But all Demons are relatively strong and competent. They could all do with this kind of immense cybernetic overhaul. I'm not sure why the Hell Priests are resurrecting an ancient race for this.

Gameplay and Story Segregation is one of my pet peeves with Doom. Though this isn't really a super-serious criticism or anything. Difficult action games, like Bayonetta, Doom, Devil May Cry, The Wonderful 101, They all have stories that portray their protagonists as effortless badasses. This always felt at odds with the gameplay to me, where I'm finding myself challenged and getting frequent game overs (certain fights I need to retry 2 or 3 times). The gameplay tells me that the forces of hell are powerful, but the story makes them out to be nothing compared to the Doom Slayer.

Not this again...

You forgot the discussion we had over all of this last year?

Anyway, there isn't any Gameplay and Story Segregation to speak of. This is a video game, and the Doom Slayer is widely feared by Hell. "The only thing they fear is you"

And artbook contains tidbits about Hell and Hell Royalty as well Doom Slayer might find incredibly challenging. But if anything, that'd be perfect for the Grand Finale when he gets to them

Well it's not like you're absolutely invincible in the game. You are perfectly capable of being killed fairly easily, the problem is that the Slayer is just that good.

I am trying to see GNinja's points but it just reminds me of that discussion we had in July on this thread about this.

I still can't figure out what does he want from any of the Doom games. You were always mowing down hordes since the first game, in which you are just a space marine assigned to Mars and shouldn't have experience dealing with former humans and demons but you do, and you get killed by the end of episode 1...

...to get revived at the start of episode 2, which I believe might've altered Doomguy somewhat.

And you make your way through Deimos, then Hell to kill the Spider-Mastermind, then you go to Earth and kill the Icon. And then you kill everything in Doom 64 and vow to stay in Hell to make sure no demon ever rises again!

You could make a case of a perpetual battle. Demons and Hell won't ever be permanently vanquished, the best you can do is keep them at bay at all times

[up][up][up] That's quite literally the definition of Gameplay and Story Segregation though.

Demons fear me, and yet they're more than capable of kicking the absolute shit out of me.
