I think the most recent characters that have the most characterization are Big Mom, Katakuri, and Doflamingo in my opinion.

Big Mom's whole crew/family was very interesting. Can't see Kaido's comparing, really.

Yeah, the Beast Pirates seem to be just unrepentant dicks, especially in the way they govern in comparison with the Big Mom Pirates. With them, one can say they believe their cause is good but are oblivious to the extent many of their morally wrong actions. They want to create their mother's idealized world, but it's done in a messed up way. However, the Beast Pirates are just knownly trying to make a world a worse place, since their leader cares about causing a war that will cause untold destruction.

I bet the Beast Pirates have a Social Darwinist mindset in that they think being unrepentant dicks is perfectly fine, even laudable, on the grounds of "survival of the fittest". Never mind of course that Social Darwinism is bullshit. But it would mesh with their Animal motif.

There is some irony that the Pirate crew that has the most animal motifs due to being Zoan users are the most blatant example of industrialized evil in the series. It's rather fitting that they were pitted against actual animal people like the Mink tribe who lived in relative harmony with their environment.

[up]

That would explain why they are such colossal assholes. As you said before, it does seem their beast motif is invoking that Social Darwinist mindset. Also their Barbarian sub motif also helps with that way of thinking as well.

[up][up][up][up] Well, I think we should wait before comparing the two. Before WCI, as far as what we've had seen, Big Mom was just a fat glutton

I think Law got as much characterization as Katakuri and Doflamingo.

I feel like if we didn't already know Hawkins for nearly a decade, he would have made a nice firstish impression for the Beast Pirates. Nothing like a quirky power and a nonstandard worldview to set the stage.

So has anyone seen this rather ominous interview with Oda? It's about the live-action series, and the reason why he approved it is... Concerning. Quoted verbatim:

"According to translators, Oda said he’s starting to wonder how many more years he can dedicate himself to One Piece. His uncertainty about such is the main reason he approved the live-action adaptation in the first place. Oda said he believes this is his β€œfinal opportunity” to make the project happen because of his waning stamina."

Ouch. The manga industry just chews people up and spits them back out, doesn't it? sad

I know smoking doesn't have the stigma that it does in Japan, but he really should quit the habit if he wants to maintain his health. But yeah, the manga industry really needs reforms because when even it's greatest creator is getting stressed there is something way wrong with it.

So Tama's dango can brainwash Zoan Fruit users when they're in beast form. If that doesn't turn out to be a gamechanger in this arc, I will angrily shake my fist in impotent fan rage and scream Oda's name.

Yeah, she was in front of a noose when she was about to stab the baby. I think it was very clearly a mother-son suicide. Not a territory I ever expected One Piece to get into.

If this arc ends with Tama taming Kaido with dango...

If my personal pet theory on Kaido holds, Tama's dango won't work on Kaido because his Zoan is the Human-Human Fruit.

Alternatively, is it possible Tana can pull it off not because Speed is a Zoan, but because she's a Gifter?

[up] Ehm... Chopper already has the Homo-Homo fruit

Still, I imagine, Kaido stomping everyone and while he's boasting "I'm the strongest creature of the world!", Tama throws a tango in his mouth. And then she becomes the queen of pirates with Kaido as right-hand man

Just kidding, everyone know the title of King of Pirates will be fought between Buggy and Usopp
