Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal. That's mandatory at Chrono Compendium, so you're in good company.
It's worth remembering that Chrono Trigger, while a million-seller, was no blockbuster. Does Square really want to pour its best resources into a sequel for a game that didn't even sell as well as Cooking Mama?
It Just Bugs MeIs it bad that I knew exactly who made this thread before I even opened it?
He started a thread about it in IJBM, so it's no real surprise.

Oh wait; you're serious, aren't you?
On preferring Cross to Trigger: I've only played small bits of Cross so far, but it seems to be turning out this way.
Which reminds me...I need to go back to that liveblog.

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan Chahyeah, I really liked cross. Trigger is good but Cross was more unique in all aspects.
Taking a break from FE1, for the FE8 draft insteadCan we let this thread die please?

Er...yes. Yes it was a blockbuster. Considering the market penetration of the platform was a fraction of the reach that Cooking Mama has. It was also a major seller in the US, considering its genre anyway.
That's part of why despite Chrono Cross actually edging out in raw sales numbers, Cross actually performed worse by comparison of the amount of P S1s in the market and especially compared to the sales of JRP Gs at the time of release.
...also, not sure I get Cooking Mama as an example of a failure. It's a blockbuster series - just not for core gamers.
Where does the name Squeenix come from and don't just tell me its a shortening of Square Enix because if it is that's just stupid.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackI was using Cooking Mama as an example of a success: a game that (presumably) many fewer resources were poured into, that never got much attention in the gaming community, yet sold better than Chrono Trigger, the classic to which Square devoted it's "Dream Team." My point was, classics don't always pay. They may develop a louder fanbase, but if Square deems it unprofitable they aren't gonna make a sequel.
It Just Bugs MeIt's a shortening of "Square Enix".
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Yes, but at the time that Chrono Trigger was new, a million seller was a rarity. It was selling at the same pace as Final Fantasy was at the same time.
Hooray! An optimist!
Discover the rest as the game progresses. They could reuse mechanics and graphics in Final Fantasy, though.
It Just Bugs Me...there's a big difference between "Chrono Trigger was a big seller in The '90s" and "Chrono Break is a good idea".
I think that it's more about the prospective audience at the time. Mario Kart DS was released in the same year as Cooking Mama for the same system and has sold more copies, despite hardly being a "classic".
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.CTrigger was released in 1995, CCross in 1999 (or 2K in N. America) *. Citing the sales performance of either of those games in support of a new game over a decade later, when the game development environment has changed so much, isn't exactly all that useful a comparison point, especially if you don't want some half-assed slap-together project looking to cash in on the name recognition (which, presumably, isn't something fans of the game would desire ). Just like technology, game development marches on (in part because of technology, even).

Eh, I'm over this now. There are numerous promising fan projects out there, I'll just keep an eye on them.
