I'm inclined to think that "character who is good at more than one thing" is total chairs.
So...my vote would be stay with just the former definition.
I'm not sure the latter is even a trope. It's pretty rare that a character will serve one and only one narrative role in any given work.
Jet-a-Reeno!Yeah, that's about my take on it. Any reason not to go through and purge the "type two" examples sometime in the next day?
Well, there are characters that serve one purpose, they're usually called "extras" though.
Fight smart, not fair.Kicking this up once more before I make the changes later today.
Usually when this kind of clear-cut Trope Decay happens it's a good idea to add some "what this trope is not" attention-grabbing text just before the examples section.

The definition of Economy Cast is "When any necessary role in a series is essentially represented by only a single person, even if it would be more realistic to have several." But the examples seem to have taken this in two completely different directions: First, when there's a recurring role in an ongoing series, like "police officer" or "doctor" that in the real world would be filled by a large number of people depending on what specialty is involved or who's on duty at any particular time, but in the series it's always the same person or one of a small group of people. For instance, there were over a hundred trials in the Perry Mason TV series, and nearly all of them were against the same district attorney.
The other is more nebulous - it's when the same character serves more than one narrative role. For instance, in Burn Notice, Fiona is both the hero's love interest and the team's loose cannon and explosives expert.
The YKTTW is long gone, if there even was one, but I'm inclined to believe the trope was made with the first type of example in mind. What should be done with the second, though? Split? Purge? Leave as-is?
