Stock Phrase used to justify a bad decision?
Nope. Dang, I lose again.
Chekhovs Sacrifice? Er, no, not a good use of the Chekhov brand.
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.Make the page about the phrase, and rename this.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Keep the bad examples at least for now, they might be useful if/when whe split the Stock Phrase version with this title.
De gustibus non est disputandum.^Yeah, I say we split this Phrase and put a more accurate name on the entry, because I have heard this phrase a lot. I dunno where, but I'm sure I have.
It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: Heard It A Million Times, and not just when a superhero abstains from using his powers. Create another page for the stock phrase and rename this trope.
I agree, keep the name and redirect all Pot Holes to the Stock Phrase, since that's what it's usually useed as. However thr trope should stay.
Favorite TV Tropes Quote: "Going on a journey, I've got my cell if you need me."This has got to be the only time I haven't won "can you guess what the trope is?" Or maybe the second. Usually the trope is obvious to me, even if it isn't obvious to some other people.
But this time... the name is waaaaaay too broad.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.So... any idea what to change the name to?
Is this even worthy of being a trope? Is it sufficiently distinguishable from, say, Brought Down to Normal?

she her hers hOI!!! i'm tempeI don't think it's distinct from Brought Down to Normal. Vote to repurpose the title for the stock phrase.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"^ What he said, though that would result in needing to change Brought Down to Normal's description, and not just for the obvious removal of the mention of the trope in the thread title.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpWe're definitely repurposing the title for the stock phrase. I don't think we need a vote on that.
she her hers hOI!!! i'm tempeThis still needs resolving. I think it needs to be repurposed for the stock phrase, as apparently do others, but it hasn't yet.
It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk BirdI agree. Image picking just got very confused because the trope wasn't what the name says it is at all. It needs a better name STAT.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIt's not even that it's obscure, it's just utterly misleading. The current name gives you a clear idea on an entirely different trope.
Hah, I just noticed... The trope description itself misuses the trope name! (Albeit probably deliberately, but still.)
Hmmm... Depowerment Regret?
Well, as no one is defending the current name, let's figure out some rename proposals.
From what I can tell, if you ignore the quote, the page image, and the examples, the core trope seems to be:
- A character leaves behind something that gives them an edge for some reason and kicks themselves later when they need it.
I'm sorry, I just laughed. That just shows how screwed up this trope is right now. :D
One month later...? :)
ETA: I'm a little amused that no one is advocating the status quo and using the healthy number of links and "bringing people in" statistic as evidence. ;) (OTOH, this is one of those circumstances where it's very clear that the stats are misleading, and why.)

Not bad, but could be mistaken for a villain temporarily depowering a hero. Doesn't quite encompass the important parts of the trope.
ETA: So what does everyone think about tweaking Brought Down to Normal to encompass this trope?
edited 11th Jan '11 5:40:04 PM by Leaper
@Leaper: At this time, the trope is already mentioned under Can't Stay Normal, type 2.
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.Huh. Is this a new development? Because if so, doing that may be a little premature at this point, no matter how good a solution it actually is.
Before clicking the courtesy link, what is this trope about? Got an idea?
Actually, it's about heroes depowering themselves, followed by something happening that requires them to use the powers they just dropped.
The name is explained in the article, but if you have to explain it, it's not very good, is it?
Even on the page itself, there are examples using the phrase that have nothing to do with the trope described. (yes i am going to remove them, i am not that lazy)
