The speed and randomness of the updates was definitely part of the addictiveness to live-reading. Classic intermittent reward button. Hit F5 again, maybe there'll be an update this time!
The notifiers definitely helped calm things down a bit. But it didn't stop the F5 jokes.
This makes me think: while my first attempts to read Homestuck were stymied by how long the chat logs got by the time the trolls first showed up, I bet that was part of the appeal. These logs are pretty entertaining, and if you were following along with the comic in real-time then taking a few minutes to read a few of them wouldn't be any issue. In fact, their length probably made them appealing when they would each be only one of a few new updates at a time.
The way I'm currently reading HS—just plowing through hundreds of pages each day, spending upwards of 6 nearly uninterrupted hours—is completely different from the way Homestuck fans would have read the comic as it updated.
I'm going to dip out now. My presence unintentionally dampens any want to discuss spoilery elements, so I'll be courteous and let you return to normal discussion. I won't be in here again until I come across some plot revelation/twist that bears freaking out about in this topic.

I mean, conversation is dead here otherwise unless Honestuck^2 does something.
Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireThe third most popular fandom hobby back in the day was living vicariously through someone else going through Homestuck as I recall
Forever liveblogging the AvengersYeah, you weren't impeding any spoilery discussions.
Or at least you weren't impeding me. I'd do a whole post in spoiler tags without minding, I've done it before. But most of that conversation has just dried up by now, really.
Do keep posting if you want!
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.Damn, I ended up giving up halfway through Hiveswap Act 2...
I kept playing, but reached the part where you have to seduce Elwurd, ran out of ideas, and that's where I gave up.
...Thinking back on it, the ending and epilogues weren't the only blow the Homestuck community suffered. The forum crash was a major one, especially as the forum admins failed to restore the forum afterwards (not even building an empty forum on the ashes of the old one!), so all fan adventures had to move away... And those too ran into major problems like "hosting your images on Photobucket".
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Man, it was so lively in here back in the day. We'd drift off on tangents between updates only to suddenly re-rail the conversation whenever one dropped.
Ah yeah, that was a feverish time.
Twas fun.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I remember I used to check out the Reddit a lot until the debacle last year. As important and comparatively sane as the Reddit is compared to the rest of the fandom, they have an awful habit of scapegoating anyone close to Hussie for anything they say. Not to mention that their former leader was a massive prick who Hussie had to force to step down.
hs^2 is now on hiatus till april at the earliest and the snake solutions studios that was behind it is done.
in other news hussies new game thingey came out. the first part at least
Source for the dissolution of Snake Solutions Studio?
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing. Its website https://www.ssstudio.org/ says fangs for the memories and has 2019 to 2021 date
Snake Solutions was the collaborative partnership between Kate and Aysha. As far as I can tell Kate has completely washed her hands of anything to do with Homestuck and from what little I've paid attention to her social media it seems she's not doing any creative projects of the sort Snake Solutions was set up for anymore. She hasn't even been in the Pgenpod discord server since some time last fall.
A lot of people have been speculating that this means a premature end for HS^2 but I think it'll probably continue under full What Pumpkin control.
There's also the three month hiatus they only announce on patreon
doublepost to say all the patreon bonus hs2 comics are now free to read for anyone
Hmm. I understand his reasoning. But 'no updates until it's 100% done, at which point we'll just send out the entire thing' is a pretty shitty update schedule for a webcomic.
"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."Given how much harassment the crew has been getting, it’s more than understandable.
on the one hand some of the acted bad, on the other even if thats so the level of harrasement they got veered beyond just not liking the writing so I can understand that.
Yeah, I admit I wasn't onboard with a lot of what Homestuck^2 was doing, so I bailed out and that's that. But all the glee I've seen about the comic's current status is a complete bummer. Even Hussie's been on the receiving end of it after Psycholonials.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).What happened with Psycolonials?
Forever liveblogging the Avengersi'm curious too. i know there's been criticism over it feeling like a middle aged dude trying to write "relatable" 2020 internet humor and not tackling it's themes very well, but as far as i'm aware there hasn't been much controversy because, well, there hasn't been many people talking about it in the first place.
for being the next work created by THE creator of homestuck, it's got... a little over 130 reviews on steam.
yikes.

"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeI have seen one conversation of complaints about it while bouncing about the internet, which boiled down to "Character who isn't supposed to be a good person said something shitty", in both the reasonable "I don't like that this came up and wish it hadn't" and the unreasonable "It was bad of Hussie to write this because it's bad" forms. I have to imagine I'd see more controversy or general discussion if I was out looking for it, but I see a fair bit more Homestuck^2/Epilogues grumbling without really looking for that, either. (And that's not counting here or other Homestuck discussion spots, I mean bumping into it looking at art or whatever.)
For those curious what the complaint was, presumably spoilers, a lesbian flippantly tells a bi woman she'd turn her gay if they had sex. Seemed clear in the screenshot it was being portrayed as the gross and dumb thing to say that it is.
I'm probably going to wait until more or all of Psycholonials is out before I get the first part.

People made specific programs that periodically checked the RSS, to pop a notification that the comic had just been updated, which in "fast" weeks could happen several times a day.
I know there was at least one in wide circulation, and I built myself one for my personal use.
