This reminds me (cause Bug/Steel -> Forretress and Scizor -> Gen 2): part of the issue with early Bugs is that their STAB options were practically nonexistent due to distribution. Their best option was usually Hidden Power.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Gen 5 at least swung the pendulum in the type's favor somewhat by introducing a lot of very strong Bug types (and Leavanny) into the fold.

It's been 3000 years…Bug isn't awful as a type tbh. It has decent resistances and okay coverage. It just has super slim pickings for good Pokémon because Game Freak largely pigeonholed it into a specific game design space until Gen 5.
Not really? It has as many weaknesses as resistances, and is terrible as an offensive type. It's technically better on the type chart than grass, but grass has gotten a lot of support over the years that bug hasn't and has an important role in checking water. Bug only hard-counters grass, but fire does that just fine, while being a vastly better type
As far as good pokemon goes... most gens try to make at least one decent bug. They don't always succeed, but it's only gens 3 and 6 where all the new bugs are low-BST garbage
Bet you can say about bug defensively is that it resists types that are "good" to some degree (Ground, Fighting, and Grass).
However, it's also severely weak to three "good" types (Rock, Flying, Fire) so really, it's kind of a wash there.
You'd think with all the puffery about Articuno lately you'd see it more use in VGC but it didn't even rank in top 12 usage.
And apparently the king (THE GOTY!) returned to the top usage.
the GOAT of ALL TIME Mr. Incineroar
Okay, I've been playing a bit more of Prism now, and my team has started to take shape a bit more. Currently I have Pupitar, Quilava, Flaaffy and Kirlia, and I also obtained a free Totodile that I've since evolved into Croconaw. I debated whether to use Vaporeon for my Water type, but I don't think it gets any Water moves for awhile in Prism, and Water T Ms seem very hard to come by, so I'll stick with Croconaw for now and see how it goes.
That leaves the sixth slot. I've mentioned before that I could use a Fighting type, and having just captured a Shroomish, I wonder if that could be filled by Breloom. However, I've also recently evolved my Zubat into a Golbat, with the hopes of getting a Crobat. If I can find a Fighting TM, I can always teach that to one of my bulkier Pokemon and stick with Crobat...but I do wonder if my team's type resistances would be better if I went with Breloom.
Any thoughts?

Oh God! Natural light!I just realized, there are no Electric/Fighting type Pokemon.
I think Fighting has been combo'ed with almost every other type but Electric and Fairy.
It's always weird to think of what hasn't been done yet in this series.
One Strip! One Strip!Rob, I think your brain is broken again, Pawmot exists. It's line is literally Electric/Fighting type.

I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.Iron Hands is also Fighting/Electric type.
Funnily enough, all Pokemon with the Electric + Fighting combination were introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

If you wanna talk type combos that haven't been used, there's Rock/Ghost.
It's a combo that would really help out Rock, but GF is going out of their way to NOT use it with certain Pokemon that are literally made of rock and ghosts.

Ok, but I'm right about Fighting/Fairy, right?
I can't believe I forgot those two. I was just looking at them on Bulbapedia too.
One Strip! One Strip!Iron Valiant is Fairy and Fighting type.
Iron Valiant. One of my new favorites from Paldea actually.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.Seriously, Ghost/Rock is a weirder combo we haven't had yet.
Isn't that right Spiritomb and Runerigus?
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult. There's no Fire/Fairy type yet, leaving Fire as the only main series starter type to not be mixed with all of the others.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite. It's really not that hard to find a list of unused type combinations
Pokemon Legends Z. Kalosian Cinderace. Fire/Fairy. Make it happen, Game Freak!
I would also accept Kalosian Incineroar, now portrayed as a Face wrestler.
Talking about unused types makes me wonder if we get regional forms for some pokemon.
After 10 year plus years I have the confidence to be here. Let's give it EVERYTHING we've got! It's...PUNISHMENT TIMEI’d certainly hope so.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! So Normal is the Type with the most unused Type Combinations. Guess that makes sense.

Game Freak seems to be stuck in the mindset that Bug should be a "beginner's type", as many bug types are early-route Pokemon that evolve early with okay stats.
