I feel like the Hitmons should have a higher BST than 455.

[up]Honestly that can said for a lot of pokemon in general. I consider generation 2 the worst example considering so many pokemon in that gen can be pretty meh, even when fully evolved.

Most Gen 2 mons were scrapped Gen 1 mons, and even then Gen 2 mons were overshadowed by Gen 1.

Here are the Hitmon's current stat spreads:

Hitmonchan: 50/105/79/35/110/76 Total: 455
Hitmonlee: 50/120/53/35/110/87 Total: 455
Hitmontop: 50/95/95/35/110/70 Total: 455

And here's my idea for what they should be:

Hitmonchan: 70/80/120/35/100/80 Total: 485
Hitmonlee: 70/120/80/35/100/80 Total: 485
Hitmontop: 70/100/100/35/100/80 Total: 485

It amuses me how Hitmonchan, ostensibly the defensive one based on evolution methods, is still slightly more lopsided toward Attack than Defense.

Their HP is only 50? That's kinda lame.

Hitmonchan's defense being 79 is hardly impressive. And he's kinda slow too? He's like the Master of None among them.

The huge Special Defense was also a weird addition made in Gen 2 (same thing happened to Beedrill). In Gen 1, when both Special stats were the same, the two Hitmons only had a Special stat of 35.

That's an improvement lol. I remember cloyster was the opposite somewhat, his special went from a respectable 85 to a miserable 45 special defense, making "magic" his archilles heel more or less. He still has that godly defense at least.

Psychic got nerfed hard by that: Stuff weak to it now had decent Sp Def rather than pitiful special, and could hope to take a hit.

Then we have Hypno, who suddenly became as bad an special attacker as it was physically.

So, Hypno went from dealing around 80% damage with Psychic to Machamp, to dealing around 50% damage.

I'd argue that Slowbro lost because the Special Split nerfed Amnesia.

[up]And in fairness to any semblance of game balance, having double strength Calm Mind floating around seems like a bad idea. Slowbro's real loss was being a Psychic type post-Gen 1, compounded with awful speed and lack of priority leaving it wide open to being Pursuit-trapped. The fact it still had some use after that is something of a minor miracle.

[down]That too, with just enough beef to survive neutral hits.

By the way, he's a list of all of the Pokemon in the above two lists who got their Special stats changed again later on, or a sort of "where are they now" in regards to those Pokemon's Special stats.

  • Pikachu's Special Defense of 40 was reverted back to what it was in Gen 1: 50.
  • Clefable's original Special Attack of 85 was boosted to 95.
  • Wigglytuff's new Special Attack of 75 has risen to 85.
  • Vileploom's original Special Attack of 100 went up to 110.
  • Victreebel's new Special Defense of 60 was boosted to 70.
  • Finally, Exeggutor's new Special Defense of 65 was boosted to 75.

to be fair, the fact that they fit Pokemon Red and Blue onto carts that small is an outright technological miracle

like, the fact that the games are as buggy as they are is evidence that they are using literally every resource available to them to fit 151 Pokemon and an entire game on less than one megabyte.

sure, gen 1 had issues. but they're issues that come with the territory of doing something that unprecedented and needing to use every spare byte possible.

The fact that one programmer cleaned gen 2''s spaghetti code enough to fit Kanto onto the cart tells me is less a technological marvel and more dumb luck.

...Even ignoring the coding, gen 1 had some pretty dubious design choices. Like, did you know that counter originally only worked on normal and fighting moves?
