I caught one earlier this morning and chuckled at Sun's description of it. And then it reminded me on how much trouble Ash had training Caterpie (And Misty yelliing at him for catching an caterpillar and using it against Pidgey).

I'm working on the idea that the first ED will predict his team this region so unless we get an updated opening or ending that hints at him having a water or bug type I'm not seeing it.

What hints are these?

The only upcoming Ash captures are likely Grubbin and Litten. We don't know about anything else.

I kinda wish Ash didn't get Litten if only because I prefer him with one starter a gen, but at least its better than getting all 3 since that gets boring.

You do know that Z-Moves aren't limited to Pokemon of their respective Types right?

Litten for example can use All-Out Pummeling and Never Ending Nightmare. As Incineroar he can use 9 different types of Z-Moves (not counting the one exclusive to his species).

The ending could just be giving us a sample of the Z-Moves Ash will be using. If the trials in the anime mirror the games (and yes Ash will be doing the trials a Poke Fan magazine confirmed it) Ash will be getting a total of 11 Z-Crystals at least.

Just because he's doing the trials doesn't mean he'll get all of the crystals associated with them. It could very well be that the crystals will be distributed between him and his classmates, especially since he has half of the Captains for Classmates.

It's kind of like Misty with her Gym Leadership and Clemont with Hyper Training; the Anime can be considered a pseudo-Origin Story for several of his companions; in this case, the Captains of Akala plus Sophocles, successor to Molayne.

He might not get a Wimpod if Guzma appears and he has his Golisopod; the main characters generally don't use Pokemon the villains use.

We literally already had this conversation... Back in DP Brock had a Croagunk while (insert name here) had a Toxicroak. It's not unprecedented.

Ash still battled Misty for the Cascade Badge even though she wasn't the official Gym Leader. We might get something like that here.

Going by the Z-Ring Kiawe has already passed his Trial.

It would have been interesting to see how Ash dealt with a Wimpod's cowardly nature and overall tendency to run away, tbh.

What I'm saying is that while e.g. Ash will get (at least) the Pika-Z-Crystals, the Fightinium, and the Decidium and/or Incinium, it will be Kiwae that gets the Firium, and perhaps a few others, with Lana getting the Primarium and possibly the Waterium if someone else doesn't, etc.^note And don't give me that Ash and Kiwae are the only ones with Z-Rings right now. Given that, e.g., Lana has Popplio and not Ash, it stands to reason that she could have hers evolve. Or, alternately, we'll get a rival with with a Primarina, but that still means that Ash won't get one.

After all, there are only 7 slots on each Z-Ring, just like there's only 6 Pokemon per team. Maybe Ash would hold his spare Z-Crystals in some sort of vault, but I think it would be more likely that the wealth will be shared with the Captains and possibly others. Getting Aquaman's "work" schedule is better than not having a "work" schedule at all, even if you ultimately Can't Catch Up to The Hero and The Rival.

With only 70 new pokemon this gen, like half being legendaries, guardian pokemon or Ultra beasts, Ash's range of potential captures is small.

Then you have to factor out fish pokemon like wishiwashi that can't battle on land, then all the feminine pokemon Ash usually never gets, then the pokemon already owned by the other main characters in the anime (like TR's or the trial leaders pokemon), then the pokemon Ash generally doesn't get like horses, the anchor, Yungoose, generic grass pokemon outside the starter, etc....there's not much. They also seem to be skipping the traditional bird for Ash this time around too.

Perhaps that's why he's getting two starters this gen, the writers seem to not have much options what to give him. Only potential ones I see from here is the sand castle pokemon, Wimpod, maybe Drampa, and I don't know what else.

It's a Shonen Anime. It's less "This looks like a job for Aquaman" and more "Keep calm and wait for Ash".

Should I even point out that Ash seems to like speedier Pokemon and is in the slowest region?

I can see Ash getting a Rockruff that evolves into Lycanroc (either form).

Its kind of funny the Pokemon anime does change its tone every single saga. We've had 7 generations of the anime now and despite them all roughly following the same formula (Gyms, Team Rocket, etc), they're all so different from each other. No two sagas of the pokemon anime ever felt alike.

I don't know how they did it. The anime follows roughly the same template each arc, but Kanto, Johto, AG, DP, XY and now SM all feel very different from each other when you watch them and what happens. I know its the different travel companions that give each saga a different feel, but even then the writing style changes from saga to saga.

Really no two sagas of pokemon ever felt exactly alike.

How do you think they feel different? Like, individually?

Currently watching the Movie on Disney XD. Volcanion is such a grumpy-pants.

Meh, I'm ambivalent towards a lot of event Pokemon.

I did NOT expect Bewear to have such a high pitched voice.

I tend not to go to store events, but I do usually get the Mystery Gifts through internet. No point in turning down a free Pokemon.

Since Ash already has Pikachu, Rowlet and it's fairly obvious he'd get Litten (hopefully they give both of them focus and evolve, I'd hate that one got tossed aside like Torterra), what else do you want to see? Since Alola doesn't have that many new Pokemon, perhaps he'd catch an Alolan form or something from past gens.

Dewpider, Wimpod, Minior, or Passimian.
