It used to. When it was released, it was pretty terribad.

These days, it's pretty good, if a bit overdone with the DLC.

Personally, I don't have any DLC (except possibly the Sparta DLC, I believe I got it with the edition I bought) and I'm having a blast.

I don't think it's necessary to have fun.

I agree. I was just mentionning that it does have more DLC than the other Total Wars so if one wants everything, it might be more pricy than they expected.

So, if I were to get it from Steam, it wouldn't be painful to play it? Steam has the patches? (I presume there were patches that fixed the problems when it came.)

As for downloadable content, it's still fun to play with little to no downloadable content?

...Why did it have so many problems when it came?

Idk really. CA may have rushed it out, or just bad coding in general.

But if you buy it on Steam it should be perfectly serviceable.

Certainly, my post wasn't really aimed at contradicting you as much as just putting forward my experience with the DLC.

If you buy it from Steam (I don't even know if you can buy it elsewhere), you will automatically download the Emperor Edition, which is the patch that fixed many of the game's problems and made it an enjoyable game.

As for the problems themselves... There were a lot of bugs, gameplay issues (I wasn't playing back then so I'm mostly speaking from second hand knowledge, but the gameplay had been somewhat gutted from previous Total wars, removing features that were commonplace), and some graphical issues and slowdowns. Furthermore, relatively recently, there was another overhaul that updated the political and intrigue system to make it more in-depth.

Of course, some people then started complaining that women were appearing as generals in the game and have started review-bombing the series, but to that I say whatever.

As my post said it's more than possible to have lots of fun without the DLC, the Vanilla game has a good number of factions and thus you could probably play for at least dozens of hours without needing to buy anything.

I didn't buy it on release but if I remember correctly it was from a combination of being very ambitious and pushed out too early, compounded by the fact that pre-release material was actively misleading.

It seemed to be quite the dumpster fire, thankfully, CA has stuck with the game and Emperor Edition is very good.

Ah. So, what is the best downloadable content for the game?

And...

Some factions depending on the culture have the possibility of getting a female general, about 10% normally but Roman and Greek cultures have 0% as a representation of their highly misogynistic and patriarchal cultures.

People began crying about historical inaccuracy and SJW's while not providing any actual evidence to back up their claims, for example, I've been called a troll because I asked for a citation.

It's just misogynists who won't want women in their vidya game and don't have any actual citations from a reputable authority to back up their claims.

Something that might have helped to skew mysoginistic opinions is that when you are fighting a faction, you'll be killing their generals a lot, generally during each battle they are involved in. Which means that the dead general is replaced by a new one, and if that general had a wife, it could very well be her. Therefore, it looks like there are more women generals than there actually are because you'll kill so many generals in the first place they'll just come up naturally.

As far as DL Cs go, I wouldn't be able to tell you which DLC is better than the other, because a lot of it would come down to personal preference. They very much all play with the same mechanics as the base game, but with specific factions with some unique units due to the time period involved. There are also culture packs that add additional playable factions to the game (and I think the DLC factions are present as adversaries in campaign even if you haven't bought the DLC to play them yourself).

I would suggest playing the grand campaign once to at least see if you want to play more of the same but in a different setting before you buy the DL Cs.

Edit: Also wait for a Steam sale. Rome 2 generally gets a pretty hefty discount.

Glad to see they improved the campaign significantly. Battles look improved, and I'm glad to see they got rid of those ugly saturation effects from the demo a few weeks back.

You know what kind of Total War game I'd like in the same vein as Throne of Brittania? Hundred Years' war. I want to recreate Jeanne d'Arc's adventure in a Total War game and see what happens if she survives.

Getting burned at the stake by the French, probably. Or otherwise quietly disposed of. After all, the English only got hold of her after Charles VII of France refused to negotiate a ransom with Burgundy, as was customary at the time.

Life sucked in those days for peasants, women, and especially peasant women.

[up]I mean sure, but paying a ransom required her to be captured in the first place.

So what happens if she doesn't get captured? That's the alternate universe kind of stuff I want to play through in Total War.

Like I said, Charles VII would get rid her himself, instead of taking the opportunity of having the Burgundians do the dirty work for him. The problem wasn't that Charles couldn't pay, it's that he wouldn't.

Well that would be a good excuse to trigger a realm divide where Jeanne must become Queen of France with her supporters. [lol]

Turns the whole war into a Crusade against England and Burgundy XD

It would be good for a Sagas thing, though. Only three countries.

Yeah, I thought so. Plus a good way to go back in the Medieval setting without doing Medieval 3.

So, let's check the cycle of games:

1. Shogun.

2. Medieval.

3. Rome.

4. Medieval.

5. Empire.

6. Shogun 2.

6+1. Rome II.

8. Warhammer.

9. Warhammer II.

10. Romance of the three Kingdoms.

So, what's next for the cycle of games? Shogun 3? Empire 2? Rome III?

After Three Kingdoms and Warhammer 3, I would expect a new Saga game. Lots of less-explored smaller conflicts to play with. Maybe an opportunity to explore ancient warfare on other continents, such as South America or Africa.

I really want Empire 2, the first one had such awesome potential but like Rome 2 it just had terrible execution.

Unlike Rome 2 it didn't get years of patches and DLC sad
