Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

I feel like obviously dangerous-looking toberries kind of misses the point.

I think the contrast between how cute tonberries look, and how dangerous they actually are, is kind of the point.

Sort of like:

It's a shame that Revenant Wings is kinda naff because I love the art design.

So, I finished reading Yumi and the Nightmare Painter today. The afterword discussed the book's inspirations, and surprisingly the largest influence was Final Fantasy X, and not for the reasons I'd initially assumed. It's because FFX is a story in which the two main characters have jobs that aren't possible in the real world; Tidus is an athlete in a fantastical sport, and Yuna's job is to send the spirits of the deceased to the next world. That's an aspect of the game I'd never really thought much about.

Blitzball is a master stroke of world building. It attracts the curiosity of the player and is a narratively convenient cultural touchstone to bring Tidus into the fold. It's a shame the minigame is glorified dice.

There is some strategy in Blitzball. It is still pretty random but you can load the dice in your favor by picking the right players. Tidus’ unique Jecht Shots also make it much easier.

[up][up] It also gave Tidus a unique position among FF protagonists.

Namely, he’s a spoiled rich kid who never had to work a day in his life.

I always kinda dug Tidus' role in the story.

Like, the rest of the cast has taken everything for granted their whole lives, but all it took for them to start to see the manifold contradictions and fallacies of their belief was one dork asking "Why?" all the time.

I mean It really was one of those you wouldn't believe me until you saw it with your own eyes type of deals and Auron himself Really didn't know how Bad it was overall, He just knew that the Final Aeon was a false hope... He only really gets an idea of it all when they invade Bevelle but he seemed to have his suspicions

Hell until Operation Mi'hen you have no reason to believe Yevon is rotten well outside of them heavily telegraphing Seymour's a villain with his theme music.

and Operation Mi'hen is a progressive joint operation of the al bhed and yevon to try and kill Sin.

the mask only comes off once you kill Seymour, with it revealed how many were in the known of his murder of his father

Um, no? He's a professional athlete, which is a job. And by all accounts he takes it pretty seriously.

I also disagree about calling him spoiled, given that his backstory is pretty explicit about how he was abused by his father and neglected by his mother.

I mean, you can be spoiled and be abused at the same time. The way Tidus reacts to Auron in certain scenes really does indicate to me that he's spoiled. THIS IS YOUR FAULT! EVERYTHING EVERYTHING! Lots of spoiled rich kids had terrible parents.

And. I'm not really hating Tidus, it's just the vibe I get from him, yeah he's an athlete and that's a job but it's not really work in the more traditional sense is it? He's basically a celebrity, his job isn't at all unpleasant, he's never had to worry about putting food on the table or any bigger responsibilities till he gets to Spira. Blitzball is a game to him and he has tons of adoring fans to stroke his ego.

Even his voice actor describes him in similar terms. So yeah, I do see him as more pampered than the average Final Fantasy protagonist.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's not understandable.

Tidus is a flawed but heroic guy. He's a spoiled kid, that's how his voice actor approached his character.

I dont even really think he is really a 'spoiled kid' so much as a victim of a Trauma Conga Line. Can only roll with it so far till you break and he rolls with it extremely far.

I'd like to talk about all of the plot parallels and differences between Yumi and FFX, but I'll probably have to put the whole thing in spoilers.

I had picked up on some of the FFX inspirations while reading Yumi, but I also had previously seen B$ talk about his favorite games and list FFX as one of his top 10.

—————————

Whether or not Tidus counts as “spoiled” depends on how we define “spoiled”, I’d say. Celebrities are people too and don’t deserve to have their troubles dismissed just because they may not have to worry about financial insecurity.

From what info we know, Tidus was abused, neglected, and on some level had to parentify himself with Auron only checking in some of the time at a distance as some mysterious dude.

Literally the first thing Tidus does after the opening sequence is successfully find shelter and build a fire to feed himself and stave off hypothermia, kid has some serious wilderness survival skills for a 17 year old who grew up in the city.

—————————

As for his reaction to Auron…

It isn’t just understandable, it’s outright justified.

Tidus’ entire concept of reality was just shattered by some eldritch entity showing up out of the ocean, annihilating his home, and warping physics itself around it. Meanwhile, Auron shows up standing around like a mysterious jackass, actively teases that he knows what’s going on, and refuses to explain anything. Then the reality warping gets turned up to eleven, Tidus wakes up in the ocean surrounded by some ruins and does the forementioned wilderness survival, and finds himself in a very alien world.

Some time (and multiple near-drownings in the deep sea) later he finds some friends and a semblance of stability with exactly two connections to his past life in the form of blitzball and a girl who claims to know his abuser. And then the very next time that he gets to play blitzball, it is once more interrupted by fiends coming out of nowhere and slaughtering people, and once more Auron shows up standing around like a mysterious jackass, once more teasing that he knows what’s really going on, and once more not explaining shit. So this time Tidus snaps at him, and only then does he start talking.

Tidus has every right and sound reason to accuse Auron. And literally 5 seconds later in the same cutscene he is explicitly proven to be 100% correct in accusing Auron, because Auron fucking admits it. He and Jecht conspired to have Tidus swallowed by Sin, brought to Spira, and never be able to return home. That is the actual plot of the game, and Tidus called it out ASAP.

[up] While I love this post and it is MEGA AWESOME, I think Auron is the ONE EXCEPTION where being a mysterious jackass not only worked out, but was NEEDED. If he had been open about EVERYTHING right from the gate, Yuna and the other Yevon Nutjobs would have gone, "Oh! Sign us up for that ASAP!" Withholding the information to reveal it at key moments, was vital for everyone's actual development, so that the party would learn to QUESTION Yevon and not just drop over dead to "Kill Sin". Yuna needed to go on the journey and learn stuff by herself as much as Tidus did.

[up]Oh don’t get me wrong, I completely agree Auron was right to be evasive and needed to be as tight-lipped as he was for the plan to work, especially given the nature of Yevon (that even he didn’t know how rotten it was) and sheer audacity of what he was trying to do. Tidus and especially Yuna could not have grown in the way they needed if he just spilled all the beans up front.

But he also could have been a bit more tactful with Tidus at the start, and to his credit he does start keeping Tidus much more informed once they reunite (and Tidus himself also understands that those secrets need to stay secret once Auron loops him in).
