Because Kinkajou told me to.
So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?
My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.
I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

I quite liked After Years. I don't really mind the story being a retread, though I swear the timeline of the chapters is broken or something. Most obvious being Cecil and Rosa's confrontation with Kain lasting the entire length of a continental back-and-forth.
Gameplay-wise, I liked the variety in characters and playstyles. Most characters had a little niche that made them different from their counterparts, Edge went from being annoyingly underpowered to broken as hell, Calca Brina was weirdly fun... shame about Harley and the ninjas though.
Fuck those tails though. Spent literal months grinding for them and never got a single one.
Lightning Returns is a game that if it had more of a budget and more dev polish would have been the best game in the XIII trilogy.
Crisis Core has some things I absolutely love (Zack, the soundtrack, all the scenes with the original VII characters), but has some things I hated (Genesis, gameplay can get really repetitive)
Do C......the music was nice
I actually have the 3D mobile remake of TAY but to this day I’ve never played it

GOH! JII! RAH!Personally, I thought a sequel to FFIV was completely unnecessary. Since it already had a perfect ending.
Lightning Returns had so much promise.
I REALLY want them to return to that battle system some time.
Dissidia Final Fantasy NT new DLC character reveal set for September 24
The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests.I do like Returns's soundtrack
Heart of StoneC'mon Vivi!
I could go as far to say that LR has the best soundtrack in the franchise.
Life is more fun with infinite MP.C'mon Chocobo from Chocobo Mystery Dungeon!
Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireVivi needs more love in general.
Vivi is like the one part of FFIX everyone unanimously loves.
Mainly because they actually finish his arc. And has a solid amount of pacing.
I'd like the 9 cast more if they weren't so underwritten most of the time. It's a late Playstation RPG, there's no excuse to just ignore characters like Freya after the first disk.
"No will to break."Freya after her return does have kind of a niche as the one who is most pissed off about Kuja, but that falls off as Kuja screws over more and more party members.
(I do think most of the characters have pretty nice arcs though)

And how were they each underwritten in your opinion?
Vivi should have been the main character, and in a normal Final Fantasy game he would have been but I think being an anniversary game they made everything a celebration of Fantasy Fantasy so having so many playable characters was part of the extravagance
New theme music also a boxFreya and Amarant's arcs don't really have resolutions written into the games and Quina's kind of a joke, Zidane himself is likable but pretty static character too. Vivi, Eiko, Steiner and Dagger have pretty full formed character arcs though.
Steiner's arc gets a close, but he basically stops being relevant immediately after that point too.
I'd say Amarant goes through an arc.
He kinda does, but he's not an important character so it doesn't get to shine like Vivi and Garnet. He's just tagging along and eventually grows fond of the gang and learns the value of camaraderie.
A problem FF has continuously.
I guess it's since a lot of the games have a liquid character roster while in development.
Still would've preferred Lani.

Bleye knows Sabers. It's not an uncommon problem in JRPG's for the party to be so large that one or two (or more) characters come across as less interesting and don't really get enough focus/importance after they join. Probably the extreme example of this is Chrono Cross which has so many recruitable characters and only a tiny faction of them have any relevance to the bigger story. It's part of why I don't really see having a larger party as much of a boon, I'd rather have a smaller party where all the characters get focus/are interesting.
Final Fantasy 7 was pretty good at giving earlier character another, smaller focus arc during the second half of the game. Final Fantasy 10 is probably the best at managing spotlight, but its party was on the smaller side. But yeah, most JRP Gs have pretty clear "tiers" in how important the characters are.
The party was on the smaller side and they also had a clear focal point and a goal that stayed consistent through most of the game. That probably really helped with focus.
It's also the big saving grace of 15. For all the plot falls apart around them, the leads get plenty of screentime and have extremely fleshed out dialogue and banter. I really want the 7 remake to substantially increase the dialogue, make the team a real group and not just leave it up to the imagination with a token scenario.
"No will to break."
My favourite sequel is Duodecim. Original Dissidia was pretty boring, in big part because it was just repeating lessons from characters' home games in very condesced arcs. 012 expanded more on the lore and character interactions, and was more willing to come up with different situations for characters, and I loved it. I mean, it still doesn't have a profound story or anything, but I think it is a very solid fanservice game that actually made something interesting with the crossover premise. I had a lot of fun playing it.
I also like After Years. IV is among my least liked F Fs, but somehow "retelling of IV with some new faces" actually works for me. Also, I just like Ceodore better than Cecil.
While I remember not particularly liking original Advent Children, I like Complete and rewatch it from time to time. I also played Tactics and A2, but not the Advance one, though I wouldn't say A2 is a sequel per se. Still, I thought it was a good Tactics game, had fairly engaging sidequests but a complete bore of a main plot. I'm halfway through X-2 (I only play it when I visit my hometown which is about once per month) and I have very mixed feelings about it. Oh, and I'm pretty sure I saw anime sequel to V, but don't remember anything from it, which says a lot about its story
