Final Fantasy general

Go To

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

It's really improbable that Emerald Weapon will spawn on top of you as soon as you acquire the sub.

So naturally it did it twice

I wonder if the remake will have an even more insane superboss than EW.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."

It will be a four-way boss fight against Fuhito, Genesis, Kadaj, and Weiss.

Beating the bosses will completely change the rest of the game to require encyclopedic knowledge of the Compilation to even remotely understand it.

Would be surprised if Sapphire Weapon didn't at least get a boss fight of its own at some point after 20+ years of missing out on one.

That’s really not how Japanese really view gods in their stories. They are flawed, can be killed and are replaced by someone else as per Shinto.

The Japanese traditionally aren't too keen on big organized religions. It's a remnant of that old ingrained xenophobia that led to them persecuting Christians.

Really?

That kinda brings the tendency for evil religion in Japanese works to be Christianity / Catholic based into a new light.

[up][up][up]Keep in mind that a majority of Japanese citizens are not religious. Most don't even identify as Buddhist or Shinto. Some polls have indicated that only about 30~40% identify as Buddhist and less than 10% identify as Shinto.

Another possible reason the Japanese aren't too keen on organized religions may be the cultist terrorist attack in 1995. When your country has suffered terrorist attacks committed by a bonafide doomsday cult like Aum Shinrikyo, it's understandable that wariness of organized religions might increase.

I'm not so sure about them being fine them being totally fine with large, organized Shinto or Buddhism. The one time Japan had organized Shinto was when it was the Meiji government made it into a state religion. There's still controversy over Shinto imagery being used by the government or politicians to this day because the heavy association with Japan's fascist period.

And Buddhism had been effectively eliminated as a major political force in Japan back in the Sengoku period, when Oda Nobunaga wiped out thousands of warrior monks who were a political and military threat to him conquering Japan. It never recovered to its previous power after that, and even suffered from persecution during the whole State Shinto period. Actually, even Shinto technically did, since it had never been an organized religion before and was just the name for the many native Japanese religions beliefs. Many local shrines and beliefs where suppressed during that period to have everything be in line with the specific gods and beliefs the government supported.

That probably explains why the actual % of Shinto and Buddhist followers in Japan is not particularly high.

If you mean miko, well, those are shrine maidens.

The thing you gotta know here is that a lot of the trappings of religions like Shinto and Buddhism have become part of Japan's culture. So they do still have a presence in Japanese society even if there is no longer so much actual worship involved.

It's kind of like how some people celebrate Christmas without actually being Christian.

So, uh, Final Fantasy anyone?

I've been thinking about what kind of battle system would be peak FF.

  • Job system - It's an excellent source of strategic variety. Needs in-battle swaps like X-2/XIII.
  • Gambit system - This was a stroke of genius taking out a lot of the tedium of battle. Could probably do one gambit set for each job.
  • No screen smashing random encounters. They can stay in the past, thank you very much.
  • XIII-tier flashy abilities.
  • The battle flow of REMAKE seems to look good with the two tier system of normal attacks and ATB-limited abilities.
  • Ability to swap characters in battle, if not all can be in battle at once. Having a backup team in XII is a great relief.

[up] All those things sound good to me, though I'm having a hard time imagining them all together. To my mind, XII has most of those things anyway.

Speaking of XII, anyone know if the additions to the Switch version are coming to other platforms (PS 4, in my case)? I like the sound of them, almost enough to consider buying it again on Switch if it's ever cheap enough, assuming they don't get patched into existing versions.

On even more of a tangent, though related to the mention of job systems, I'm currently playing and enjoying Octopath Traveler, and liking its job system and old fashioned turn based combat. It kinda puts me in mind of FFX, with turn order being a known quantity and something to be manipulated strategically.

Random encounters are a bit tiresome though.

What's your alternative to MP, than?

Not sure how you're going to have a job system with more than XIII's very stripped down roles and balance it all without some sort of finite resource to spend abilities on.
