Justice Avengers: Revival

Hey all - long time no post here but I'm back to lay out some feelers to see if anyone would be interested in bringing back Justice Avengers. Back in the day, it was a great series of roleplays where the DC and Marvel universes were merged and players could freeform RP as a bunch of different characters. It got weird, it got funny and it got intense sometimes and I'd love to bring it back if there's some interest, especially if some of the old crew wants in.

Here's a couple of ideas I had as to what it could be...

• Justice Avengers Noir - set in a combo of NYC and Gotham City. The mobs and gangs run things and the villains are brutal. Heroes (or anti-heroes) have a darker, more serious bent to them and the crimes committed are a bit more grounded in reality, though with plenty of options for comic booky science and characters too. Initial villains would probably be someone like Hammerhead or Carmine Falcone and we could be dealing with things like gang wars, vigilantes, and mysteries.

• Justice Avengers Saturday Morning - more of a cartoony feel. Villains would have a kind of Monster of the Week flavor to them and there'd be more of an emphasis on fun, silliness and weird comic book science and stuff, though with a chance for some serious drama as well. The city would also be a combo of Metropolis and NYC and the cast would probably have room for some zany characters.

• Justice Avengers Siege - more of a sci-fi blend. A combo of Skrulls and Yellow Lanterns have taken over Earth and are holding it under siege. A group of heroes and villains has formed a resistance movement to fight back. This would be of a similar to vibe to that one vision scene in Batman V Superman or, to put it in another way, you'd be the Rebel Alliance of Star Wars but with super heroes and villains. There'd be an emphasis on secrecy, guerilla warfare, espionage and the like.

That's what I got so far. Definitely down to hear people's feedback or suggestions though. Ideally, I'd like to be a player as well as a GM though if anyone would prefer to take over as GM, do a co-GM thing with me or if people don't want a GM, I'm amenable to that too.

This thread does function as an interest check but it could also be used as a signup since I'm pretty sure whatever we go with will have the same signup sheet format. I've put what that format is below for any characters you come up with. You're welcome to lift your favorite intreptation of a DC/Marvel villain and play as them or create your own take on a character using the DC/Marvel hybrid world mythos. For example, maybe Bruce Wayne's parents owned Oscorp? Ferris Aircraft is a subsidary of Stark Enterprises? Nightwing partnered up with Daredevil? Just leave room for others to sign up as characters.

I'm definitely down for this. The Noir and Siege ones appeal to me the most. I will try and get a signout done this week.

It must be fate that I stumbled onto this thread when it was still at the top of the pile. I'm afraid I can't be as big a presence as I once was- most of my creative energy is going to my latest greatest brainchild. BUT, with that said, I'd be more than happy to be a presence here, be it as a player, worldbuilder, or just a general godfather to this grand experiment.

I'd be down for any of the three possible themes, though my heart belongs to the Saturday Morning option.

I was looking through some RP threads and I happen to come across this while it's new. Anyway where would the magic team-ups and fight happen? I was thinking maybe like Justice League Dark + Mystic Arts crossover.

So, so far we have a vote for each option, plus a vote for a completely new option.

But for what it's worth, a fantasy mode does also sound like a cool idea.

Great to have some interest. And Liz (who's too humble to say he started the whole Justice Avengers and was a fantastic GM) you obvious have a place here. However involved you want to be is up to you. I'm a little confused about what you mean by fantasy mode but am amenable to the idea if one of you elaborates further.

Also I can be a tiebreaker vote if need be but I imagine someone else will come in and express interest before too long.

By Fantasy Mode, I meant Alicorn's suggestion about a magic team-up thing. Still, if need be that can be worked into one of the others.

We could do it where the person declares which "version" they're from, like a Spider-verse crossover thingy?

As much as I love alternate universe stuff, I feel like that might muddy the waters too early on. The basis for my original game was crafting a world where characters from the Big Two comics had always existed side by side, as opposed to being another jamjar RP where characters from different continuities are thrown together.

I think it'd be better to have the world set up first, have the initial characters' backstories mesh together, and then let AU characters join in and add some spice to the dish.

I mean, if I wanted to, I could just have War Machine, lol. Rhodey doesn't get enough love.

I'm fine if two people sign up for the same character from different universes although I do agree with Liz it's probably best to keep things simple. Maybe one character is the "main" version and the other is the "Alternate universe one" who's visiting?

And hell yeah - Rhodey is awesome!

Wild idea but would signing up as Access be allowed? Or Amalgam characters?

This player was an old school fan, and I mean really old school. We're talking old enough to remember the silver age.

If I were joining (which I'm not saying I definitely will, because I have a lot on my plate already and I don't know what the intended pace is), my preference would be for Noir or Sat Morning flavors. They allow for more flexibility than how I'm reading the Siege premise, as in the latter there seems to be an implication that heroes and villains need to work together to bring down the overlords, which would make it difficult to play a character who's not an in-universe team player or is steadfastly against working with their heroic/villainous counterparts. I also love Noir stuff to begin with (I love writing hardboiled monologues, which I don't often get to do) and like serious drama, though I'm thinking perhaps the Sat Morning premise allows for more comedy besides dark humor, and would therefore probably attract more prospective players and a greater diversity of characters.

Edit: Supposing we play a gang leader, would we control their entire gang, or just control the leader who issues orders with mooks and such being controlled by the GM?

See, now I’m torn between Axel Asher, or an AU Eddie Brock based on the Venom movies. The idea being that Venom fights Spider-Man villains but his city doesn’t have a Spider-Man and Venom’s origin is unrelated to Spidey (again, like the Venom solo films).

…or Wade Wilson.

Almost finished She-Venom's sheet; as of right now I have her labelled as being from another universe since she's taking Brock's place as the original Venom. Unless it's possible to make her the main version here? I'm open to whichever's easier.

I still have to read All Access and Unlimited Access (plus the rest of Amalgam) but I’m wondering if I could have Access be from the events of those miniseries. Like, he’s the Access from the main Marvel and DC universes so he suspects things shouldn’t be combined but can tell it’s different (read: more stable and less chaotic) than Amalgam was so he isn’t too worried about making things separate.

For reference, one of the characters I would be contemplating signing up as is Martin Li, AKA    Mister Negative   , inspired particularly by his portrayal in the recent Playstation Spider-Man games, but perhaps taking elements from his comics version. Of course, the key to making a decent Martin Li will be integrating him with the backstories and interests of other PCs and NPCs, so supposing that I do eventually sign up, I'll wait for more details on what setting we're going with and what characters others are playing as first.
